Dropping the tranny
I have everything disconnected right now and was getting ready to drop the tranny. What I was wondering is do I have to take the bell housing off at the same time or will the tranny drop without removing the bell housing. Thanks for any help.

If you keep bell on engine, just remove four bolts and make sure enough room in back for tail so that input shaft can clear bell as it comes out. May have to loosen shifter linkage and all tranny brackets plus tilt tranny to side a little to clear bell.

Got the shifter totally out and all the tranny mounts out. Left the bell housing alone. I can't get it to come out today. So, maybe later tomorrow, I will get it out. Sure would have been easier if I would have taken the bell housing bolts out before hand. Live and learn.
I think I can still get out with the bell housing in place, I gotta get a nap before work tonight.

It will clear the bellhousing but not by much. I have to rotate the trans slightly to get it far enough back to clear the input shaft. I have done it many times now and can have the trans on the ground in about 2 hours.

Thanks for the input Gordon. I will give it a shot tomorrow. I have done cleaned myself up and calling it a day. I will let you know how it works out for me. 5 speeds straight ahead. Stay tuned.

Someday I will get the 5 speed. Would have to cut the crossmember. That does not bother me as much as the cost of the job. Can't justify to the wife why I need a 2000 dollar transmission.

Hiya
The Hayes manual is great for removing the tranny. What i learned from trial and error, and then finally reading is that the tranny is load bearing, so you have to jack the engine up from the oilpan, and then just kind of wiggle out the tranny. If you take the bellhousing off too, (well when i did it that way) you are likley to drop it on you. The Trick is to lower the engine after you get the tranny almost clear of the bellhousing, and it should give you enough distance to drop it right out. Good luck with it

I got the old tranny out Monday evening using Gordons suggestion, but I also loosened the bellhousing bolts. I haven't had any free time since then to get back out there and do any thing else. I have been working 12 hours a day at work with a 40 min. ride each way. So very little free time for me now. I will get there though.
