Default Power Steering Pulley Pandemonium!

Hey all;

Me again. I've got a problem with the lineup of my power steering pulley with my march aluminum pulley set. I got the set for running just the alt and ps. This comes with the 2 groove crank which unfortunately is one groove too short to run the stock power steering. March is telling me offset power steering pulley #523 to get the right alignment. True???

Also this is completely pressed on pulley correct? Any Removal Tips?

Check it out...

I went to the junkyard and found me a two groove PS pulley and put in on and it lined everything up for me. I wound up in the same boat as you did with my March PS pulleys. I had even had my old PS pulley powder coated and really wanted to use it.

You'll need a special puller to get the pulley off. I bent the crap out of mine trying. My pump needed rebuilding anyway so I got the innards from a early Saginaw pump with the bolt on pulley and keyway.Next go around will be much easier. :smash:

You guys are doing great. Thanks for the thoughts so far. I called around for a specific puller loan and only 1 place has one and its a bastard of a drive there. So not trusting just a big jaw universal puller to do the job right I went to harbor freight and here is what I found
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=40749

Will that work good?

Last thing I want to do is funk my pump all up.

Take it it to a shop and they will press it off and on for about $20 - 25.

You do need a special tool to grip the groove on the pulley hub and pushing on the end of the pump driveshaft, draw the pulley off of the shaft. You also require a tool to thread into the end of the driveshaft (3/8-16 UNC thrd) and draw the pulley onto the shaft.

You NEVER want to push or pull directly on the pulley so that it pushes or pulls directly on the driveshaft, that force will break things inside the pump.

BTW, the female hex that you can see if you look directly into the end of the driveshaft is there for the manufacturing plant to spin the pump and test it before shipping it to the vehicle assembly plant.

From the Harbor Freight add, it would seem that their kit should work with most pressed-on pulleys.

Spook,
I rebuilt my PS pump last month. I borrowed a puller from Autozone made especially for this job. It was off in 10 minutes.

I pressed the pulley back on with a hardened nut, bolt and washer.

FYI for any Canadians:
Canadian Tire will loan you a 'pulley puller' for removing and replacing a power steering puller free of charge. :hurray:

Did it about a 2 months ago,

Spook,

Are you running the stock harmonic balancer or an aftermarket one? The problem I think most people run into is that they completely forget that they no longer have a vette engine when they start doing modifications and the March pulleys are probably designed strictly off of the stock set-up. I know what that is all about when I attempted to line up a set of March pulleys on a '72 engine.... aftermarket harmonic balancer... Team-G water pump.... basically I was just wishing that it was all supposed to work as designed. The harmonic balancer was the killer as it wasn't designed anywhere to the specs the other (corvette) parts were.

Sorry spook, I have the do-it-yourself spirit too, but I have to go with Bobchad on this on. It was enough of a do-it-yourself project just to get the PS unit off and on, new hoses, and belt. I took the old unit and new unit to a shop and $10 later the new unit was ready to put back on.
