Default questions: holley mpfi commander 950

ok guys i am happy to say that i will be putting in a holley multi poit system :hurray: i have decided on this because it will work well if i supercharge it in about a year. i know some of you are useing these and are very pleased but i have a few questions

1) what distributor are you using? i need to find one with a tach drive i also would perfer an external coil

2) i am looking to make about 450hp and am not sure if i should go with the 30# injectors or the 36# injectors. summit says the 30# support 450 to 550 hp but holley says they support 380 to 480 but i also heard one of you say that holley was over rateing there injectors so i was thinking the 36# would work well

3) also i noticed there is an idle air control motor is that somthing i should get?

I have:

388 sbc stroked and bored
Edelbrock rpm heads with a three angel valve job
Crane cams hydraulic roller cam 276/284
Comp cams hydraulic roller lifters
Comp cams 1.6 roller rockers
Walker headers 1¾? primaries 3? collector
2½? stainless exhaust
MSD corvette tach drive pro billet distributor
MSD 6al ignition box
MSD variable timing control
March underdrive crank pulley
Acc: alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner
Electric fans
Electric water pump

I will be replacing:

Edelbrock rpm air-gap intake
Holley street avenger 770
Holley ?black? fuel pump

The compression ratio is 9:1
The motor makes about 430 hp

any tips or suggestions you have will help

Recently found out the holley stealth ram fits under the C3 hood, well at least post 72, I am also thinking of sc in the future and with the placement of the tb I might be able to adapt a current LT1 set to work much easier that routing for a carb like tb placement.

Just something to think about, keep us informed.

There is a lot of information at http://www.chevytalk.com
go to forums, and then scroll all the way down to EFI / Engine controls.

There is a TON of Holley info in there and the board is moderated by Doug, a tech with Holley, so you get direct and correct info.

1) what distributor are you using? i need to find one with a tach drive i also would prefer an external coil - I am using a small cap HEI out of a late model GM V8. External coil, controlled by the C950 computer, but no tach drive.

2) i am looking to make about 450hp and am not sure if i should go with the 30# injectors or the 36# injectors. summit says the 30# support 450 to 550 hp but holley says they support 380 to 480 but i also heard one of you say that holley was over rating there injectors so i was thinking the 36# would work well - I would go with the 36#, better to go up and then tune down than to have your injectors running full or near 100% duty cycle and not giving enough on the top end. Then if you upgrade cam or heads later then you will some over head to work with.

3) also i noticed there is an idle air control motor is that something i should get? - Yes! You need an IAC.

I guess the throttle body of the stealth ram is in a similiar place as the L98s TPI setup, so you might be able to use an L98 setup too

You could avoid some headaches by converting your tach to electric. The 75-77 tachs are bolt-ins and are electric. Then oyu can get a 91 Camaro V8 distributor. This distributor bolts right into the engine & C950 and has an external coil. You may find one at the junkyard, or you can get one at any autoparts store. Accell & MSD & Holley all have hopped up versions of this distributor if billet housings are important to you.

Definetely run the 36lbs injectors, if not 42's.

You don't absolutely NEED an IAC, but without it the ECU can't control the idle speed. I'd run one as it makes cold running easier. With no idle control it will probably stall when you let off the gas until warmed up.

BTW, you may want to get 42lbs injectors because they have enough room for when/if you supercharge. The 42's are good for 600 hp or so.

i would love to go ahead with the 42's but was concerned that i would have trouble tuning it before supercharging it

i have thought of puting in an electric tach but mine matches thhe other gauges if i can not find a tach drive distributor than i may do it

I had a friend in Sweden build me one. I thought about having him build a few more, but shipping costs made it overpriced.

There's no difference in tuning 42's vs 36's. You only get into trouble when the idle pulsewidth is less than 1.7-1.8 ms. On my 454 I get 2.3-2.4ms idle PW with 42's. I don't think a 383 will use much less at idle than my 454. The C950 with race upgrade also lets you switch injector mode to where it only fires every other engine revolution which doubles PW's. This can be used if the injector opening time at idle gets too short.

As for the tach, you can put your stock tach faceplate onto a 75-77 electric movement and it will look all stock.

There are plenty of us potential buyers in Finland at least, so please do make a few more

If you want you can check with other guys over there and then email me. I'll put you in touch directly with the guy who built mine. You'll need someone who speaks Swedish, though...

OK, I know some guys who might want one (as for myself, I just bought a new tank last year...) I'll get back to you. I happen to speak Swedish as my second mothertongue, myself...

I would say start working on the return fuel line and gas tank mods NOW. It will make life much easier when you get readdy to change to FI.
