What do you use for Fender Covers (mats)
guys, title asks, lol...
im building a very quality show car, will be driven a lot (of course)
i was wondering what you use to protect your fenders? im thinking some massive thick towels, fender covers look like they would be scratchy....
thanks in advance

Re: What do you use for Fender Covers (SharkBit)
Hey SharkBit,
I use a couple of heavy Black bath towels ( one for each side) as fender covers whenever I am working on my Black Shark. My Vette has laquer paint and the rubber or vinyl fender covers scratch it. I have even personalized the towels with iron on patches showing "300 Horsepower". And I can easily fold them up and take them with me wherever I go. You've got the right idea.
Jon.

Used to use towels, but ended up buying a couple of the vinyl fender protectors that Zip (and other vendors) sells. They've got a very soft foam backing, so no scratches, and they offer more protection against paint damage if you drop a tool or drip some brake fluid.

I use an old thick blanket folded to fit where I'm working... More padding for my ..hum...gut and protects the paint... And if I spill, I have time to remove the blanket before absorbsion...

The Summit guy forced me to buy the red fender covers that say SUMMIT on them. He wouldn't ship my order unless I got them. (At least that's what I told the wife..... )

Re: What do you use for Fender Covers (SharkBit)
A couple of 3 years ago I bought a custom set of fender covers made for the C-3. They basically cover the whole front of the car with tabs and velcro to hold them in position. Juliet Page's C-3 was used as the test dummy for these and I think she got the first set. I got in on a "Sale" the guy who made them up apparently couldn't sell them at the price he was asking and he sold a lot of 10, to the first 10 people who emailed him.
They are great, they even have flaps over the headlights if you have them up when working.
Apparently it was the same people that make all the bras for cars, because it came in one of the bra boxes. Something with a C_____, I plead senility due to age and sniffing too many gas fumes.

I use black bath towels too, jeeze I thought I was nuts, never told anybody untill now
One more thing, if you are going to this far make sure you get 100% cotton as the man made combinations will scratch. :D

I found a pair of bath mats that have soft rubber on the botttom and soft carpet on top. The rubber grips and stays put where old towels slipped off and it's thick enough to lay tools on. My car's white, can't tell right now if it is scratched.

I use a combination of soft, foam-backed fender covers along with thick blankets. In addition to working under the hood, I always keep the car cover over the rest of the car so that if someone inadvertantly bumps a door or quarter panel with a jack handle or other tool it won't scratch!

Re: What do you use for Fender Covers (GDaina)
I have tried the vinyl rubber backed commercial fender covers, but found something better during my re-build. My wife changed out our bathroom throw rugs, so I tried them and will never go back. they cover more area, and with the rubber back they stay put on the fenders. When they get dirty, into the wash machine they go. The vinyl covers don't conform to the fender very well either. Large towels would be OK, but they slip around on the paint too easily.

Anyone use the fender covers made by Snake oyl?? Here is the web site to their catalog. http://www.ssnake-oyl.com/ I was looking at some of these at Crusin the coast, and they seem fairly nice. They even make a one piece entire front end cover.
