need suggestion on how to clean brown crud on inner plastic of cooland overflow tank
just replaced radiator and the coolant overflow tank is lined with a brown looking substance....almost like thin layer of mud/rust. It comes off easily, but I can't reach most of it. Need to remove before installing with the new radiator.

I pushed a rag into the container then used a bent coat hanger to move the rag around, push it into corners and then fish it out.

Post Title Length is out the wazzoo
I am planning on this action shortly but here are my thoughts.
Unhook it
Fill it somewhat generously with H20
Get a piece of vacuum hose and blow around the inside to try and loosen the garbage (should be somewhat manageable)
Then the piece d resistance is the old shopvac suck action with the ars water.
I think it will do a good job. Oh yeah last step... REPEAT IF DOESNT WORK GREAT!!! hehe :jester
Now those damn steamer infomercials are sounding pretty good... haha
Spook

I was able to remove the tank and let is soak last night with water and simple green. Did nothing to loosen the crub. I like the idea of the simple coat hanger.

Take it out, partially fill it with water, your favorite cleaner and some gravel. Shake it around and the gravel will loosen the crud.

Remove, flush, and then use Oxy-Clean with gravel. This should do the trick. The Oxy-Clean will remove the red stains.

Re: need suggestion on how to clean brown crud
I used water mixed with trisodium phosphate, which is a common household cleaner, then I whipped a bottle brush around the inside and it cleaned up real nice.

I screwed around with different cleaning methods, none worked very well.
I bought a new one.

:iagree: Just get a new one. I tried everything to clean mine and nothing worked well. They're cheap and easy to replace. BTW, welcome to the forum.

The cost of a new one is not the problem. I have not driven my car in about 2 months and want to test the new radiator, so I don't want to wait for an order. I took an old wash cloth, soaked in hot water and inserted into tank. Shook it for 10 minutes and tank is clean. The rag wiped the whole thing clean. Scrubbed the outside and the tank is about 95% as good as a new one.

I painted mine the same color as my car, didn't even look inside
