How fast can your car go in second gear??
I get this question a lot as if it were some standard measurment for fast cars.
Am I missing something or is that just a retarded question? :crazy:
I don't know or care how fast I can go in second gear. I suppose it is quite different now with the new transmission. The new 5 speed may have actually HURT my top second gear speed!!
Dose anyone else get asked that?

That's kinda like in the movie 'Tin Cup', when Kevin Costner asks Don Johnson, "You ever break par using a 7-iron on the back 9?", and Johnson responds, "Hell, Roy, it never occurred to me to TRY it!!!"
I once went 140+ in 2nd gear; of course, it WAS a rear-engine dragster with a PowerGlide.....
OK, I'm guessing that if I wound my '82 up til it's tongue was hanging out (in a stock Cross-Fire, this occurs @ 4200 RPM!) before I swapped the 2.87s for 3.73s, and held it in 2nd gear, it'd be going 70+ MPH.
(I REALLY doubt my '82 would do this.....)
Years ago, I drag-raced my Z28 with a mild 350" hammer & 3.42 gears with the OEM GR70/15 UNIROYALS (27.4" tall). Shifting @ 5500 RPM, it ran 14.40s @ 97 MPH. Once, as I hit 3rd gear, I 'glanced' at the speedo, damn-near 80 MPH on the gear change!
Years later, I ran the 1/8-mile with a 406" motor, 28" slicks, & 4.10 gears. It was too tough to 'judge' the finish-line as I hit 3rd gear, so I 'aired-out' the 406 to approx 6200 RPM in 2nd, recording 8.0s/7.90s @ 82+ MPH time-slips...

About 90 mph at 5700 rpm... but I spend more time worrying about putting a rod through the pan than I do watching the speedo....

According to Autotap, I was doing 82 when I hit the rev limiter in 2nd. I think that is 6200 RPM.

With a 200R4 tranny, 3.90 rear and a 26" tire, at my redline of 5500rpm im doin just over 70mph in 2nd. 3rd will take me to 110. ive never topped it out in 4th but at 4000rpm it was doin 135mph. Yikes :eek:
