Default Aluminized vs Stainless Steel Exhaust

Some of you may have seen my thread on side pipes which I am planning on buying at the end of next week.

The aluminized mufflers are $499.99 and the stainless steel are $729.99. I am going to get a 10 percent discount on these prices.

My car is just a hobby and not used for basic transportation. I drive it much less than 5000 miles per year.

So, which mufflers would you buy?

I'd go with stainless in a heartbeat. These pipes are over 12 years old and still look like the day I installed them.

Mileage is not the determining factor in how long an exhaust system will last. The primary factors are environmental. Short trips, particularly in a humid climate can destroy an exhaust system in short order. Since the system has difficulty getting warm enough to vaporize the moisture that collects inside, they tend to rust from the inside out. Painting an aluminized system before installation helps only marginally for this reason. If you can afford it and especially if you’re planning on owning the car for a few more years, the only way to go is stainless. It will be a selling feature for as long as you own the car.

I have about 10,000 miles on a stainless system I installed in 1991. It still looks outstanding, the mufflers look new and I don’t even think about it. The car has spent 3 years in Hawaii and 3 years on the Gulf Coast, and you wouldn’t know it. I've considered my stainless system a bargain for a long time…
