Replacing RH Exhaust Manifold on 1972 454 with A/C
Hey guys ...
Seems I hit a bump, hit the front of the exhaust pipe and cracked the darn
manifold.
Has anyone changes one of these beasts on a BB car with A/C ??
Would appreciate any suggestions/shortcuts etc...
It looks like it going to be a real PITA :mad
This time I have no one to blame but me :cry
Thanks
Bill

I have a '72 LS5 / A/C car also ( actually 2 of them ) and I can only imagine how difficult that is going to be while the engine is still in the car.
One suggestion I have ... I replace #2 and #4 spark plugs by reaching through the A-Arm inner fender hole. I've found that I actually get a fair bit of room to work this way and can actually see what I'm doing. You probably can do the same thing to get to most of the manifold bolts. Also - soak them for a couple of days with PB Blaster. The LAST thing you want to do is round or break the bolt heads off in the head.
Good luck !!!

It's not to bad, once the compressor is out of the way. You don't need to disconnect it just remove it from the brackets and pull it up out of the way.
The hardest part is paying the $350 for a new one.
Here is a link to a reasonable one on ebay if your not worried about casting numbers.

I just wanted to add that if you put a hook in the ceiling (make sure it's in the wood framing) you can tie the compressor up. You would disconect it from the mounts and rotate it up and tie it to the hook.
You may also want to check the heat riser valve while it's out. Put it in a freezer bag then into the freezer for a couple of hours (it should close up in the freezer). I put it in the bag so the freezer didn't end up smelling like an exhaust, which would have certainly put me permanently in the garage. After 30 years mine was KIA. I decided to repace it ($34) since I plan on driving the car during the severe florida winter. If it's not working you can also gut it or buy a spacer ($24).
It's also a good opportunity to check the heat shielding on the wiring harness that goes to the starter. Also check for cooked wires while you have better access to them.
