One piece fel-pro oil pan gasket install, any advice?
Any tips / advice on removing the oil pan from my 79? I have read the manual and it states to turn the engine over until #1 is at TDC on the exhaust stroke. Is this necessary? I have #1 at TDC on the compression after changing out the cam. Engine is ready to be fired, gasket is last step.
Any and all advice is appreciated.
Cheers
Andy

Must have missed that when I installed mine, twice so far without putting it at bdc. Just put a little dab of sealant in the four corners as shown and you should be good to go, much better than the 4 piece ones.

I don't see any reason why you need to rotate the engine. Just follow the Fel-Pro instructions and clean the surface good. Use the handy blue clips to hold the gasket and the pan up until you thread the bolts in. They make the job so much easier. If you haven't removed it yet then you will need to drop one side of the steering. Just remove the two idler arm bolts and swing the steering down so the pan will clear.

Like Fever says, put a dab of RTV in the 4 corners where the gasket meets the bearing caps. This is important.

I agree with all the above advice. Just want to add my 2 cents: Be sure the pan is not stressed around any of the bolt holes. It must be nice and flat.

You might want to go to the hardware store and score slightly longer pan bolts. (Maybe 1/4" or so all the way around.)
I had to do this because the Fel-Pro 1-piece gasket is thicker and the rings around the bolt holes don't compress when you tighten. This may make your life a little easier.
Other than that, make sure the pan flange is flat, flat, flat and don't over-tighten your new bolts.
