Help me build a center armrest for my stereo installation
I have just spent a small fortune on parts for for a high-end car stereo.
It will consist of:
Stock Head unit with modern electronics and RCA line inputs
Digital Parametric and 1/3 octave graphic EQ
Soundstream 500watt 4 channel amp
CDT HD 42 component speakers in the front
Elemental designs 10" sub in the rear
Now for the input devices I am going to be a little un-orthodox- There will be two choices:
XM and and MP3 juke box
I want the remote for the Jukebox-
and the controls for the XM reciever-
All to be placed under an armrest that opens. You know... like any modern car would have.
My question is how do I go about fabricating such a thing?
I needs to look stock, open up on hinges and just look professional. I think it can be small enough to fit behind the e-brake handle.
With this setup I will have an outstanding system that is completely invisible. The component speakers will fit behind the kick pannels, the sub only requires a very small box, and the amps will be mounted on the back wall.
Any advice would be greatly apprciated!
thanks,
~Jay

I suppose you could use wood and cover it with vinyl. You could paint the vinyl with dye to match your interior. If you wanted the armrest padded, you could stick some foam inside. Or you can just buy one of those aftermarket padded armrests from Mid America et al.
I would think $15 well spent dollars at Home Depot, another $10 at Pat Cataans or JoAnn Fab (for the vinyl) and then whatever dye costs these days, and you'll be in business. You could probably have it done in an afternoon.
I'd draw you up some plans, but my sock drawer needs organizing. :D
Good Luck!

As said above you can use wood covered in vinyl or angle aluminum with plexiglass riveted to it covered with carpet or vinyl or angle aluminum with aluminum riveted to it covered with whatever.
As long as you take your time and do it right i'm sure it will look good.
I will have to say I really like your idea.
I have a 81 and have been wanting to get an arm rest but what better way to get an armrest than one that i can hide stuff in.

It also comes witout power windor switch cut-outs. I think it would be nicer with a hinge.

I like the Ecklers armrest. It states it's for 1967 thru 77, but looking at the picture, why wouldn't it fit all C3's?
I have an 81, and would also like some more storage.
Am I missing something?

Cool! That's exactly what I need :)
From their web site:
If I could find that Alternate source I bet I could save $50 :)
Who do you think the source is?
Thanks,
~Jay
