OT - Please help me convince my friend
I'm posting this here instead of OT because I like and trust the people here, I know I will get honest opinions. I've been trying to convince a friend of mine that he should do more to promote his original music. I'm posting a link to one of his blues tunes. Please take a couple of minutes to listen and post your opinions here. Help me encourage him to get his stuff out there !

Re: OT - Please help me convince my friend (76Frankenstein)
Well, I've been listening/evaluating/critiquing and helping produce music for about 15 years now, and I'll tell ya, your buddy is very talented! Nice and fluid lines and phrasing. The music blends well too. I'd buy it!
Couple of suggestions: If he DOES decide to get "it" out there, please, please use real instruments!! The bass and drums were ok for a home studio, but needs better depth and not so "perfect", know what I mean?? Didn't really do the guitar work justice. Plus, there's an energy that gets to the disc with others playing, or even using the real thing that's kind of missing here. You can tell it's ready to pop out at ya, but doesn't quite get there! Take down the noise gate a little too, it's too clean!! (I think) it needs to be just a little nastier!
Secondly, that was a great song, but it screams for a nice bridge and better ending. Would love to hear it again after a little more work on it! Over all though, this is a pretty good demo!! Shows the talent he has!
Tell your friend to take the chance!

I love the guitar work. The opening bass run was a little long and a little to "pop" for my taste. Overall though, the man has talent. I'd buy it!

73sbvert -
I'm sure he'd agree with you on the instruments - it really wasn't intended for a public demo. He gave me a disc he threw together because I was badgering him - he didn't know I'd be posting it. Hopefully, enough encouragement will keep him from being too mad ! Thanks for the comments, everyone.

I don't usually comment on OT here, but this guys got some potential. Tell him not to forget about us when he makes it big......and send me some tickets when he makes it to Houston.

If the rest of his music is as good as that he has nothing to worry about.
I thought it was great and would love to hear more.

Are you SURE thats original? Sounds a lot like the built in blues rythems on a Boss Dr. Rythem drum machine (the drum machine plays both bass and drums)

I don't want to be the one guy who critisizes, but as the two most frequently accessed parts of my house (by me) are my garage and my home music studio, I'll give you my honest feedback. I may have only owned 5 Corvettes over 5 years, but I've played and recorded jazz, blues, rock and other music for almost 20 years.
1) Your friend is a very good guitar soloist. (Something I can't do well.) Playing solos is important, but it's just a small part of your chops, with the exception of those named BB King. Unless you're like me (who started as a drummer before learning to play guitar) soloing is like passing gas, everyone can do it. Again, it's very good blues soloing, but nothing really original or earth shattering.
2) This song is not really a song, more a standard blues pattern to which one would practice their solo licks. While many songs (and famous ones, at that) utilize standard 8 and 12 bar blues patterns, there really has to be some other type of structure to the arrangement (lyrics or reoccuring melody) to solidify as a song.
3) For god's sake, go out and spend a $100 to get a real bass. Nothing spells disaster like a synth bass line. In addition, that drum beat is actually too choppy for the song. I actually take great pride in my recordings because on most of my songs I play guitar, drums, bass, keyboards, sing and sometimes play harmonica (blues harp, for those decendents of Mississippi and Chicago.) I'm not really a good guitarist, keyboardist or singer, but part of the fun is putting together a real song that maximizes your talent.
I'd like to hear a real song, with rhythm guitar, lyrics -- or just an instrumental with more creative arrangement.
