Have You Taken A Close Look At Your Gas Cap Lately? (Pics)
I don't know how I could have overlooked this for so long. I let the car run almost out of gas and inspected the inside of the tank as best as I could with a light and mirror.
I was surprised that the parts I could see actually looked pretty good. I also checked the fuel filter and it looked normal with no extra junk on it. So, I had tenatively been planning to change it, but will probably put it off for now.
But check out this gas cap:

Looks like the cap sacrificed itself - to save the tank. It could be worse.
It sounds like the tank is OK - but watch for rust on the outside corners.

While your at it drop a metal magnet into the bottom of the tank to catch all the metal flakes--some hardwear stores have em but farm supply have "cow" magnets 1/2inch by 3' long and strong--might save you some grief down the road--Glenn :U :party:

That's what mime looked like. The flange too was rusted. You can carefully unscrew the flange and try to buff it clean with some steel wool. I think there are 9 socket head screws. Make a new gasket and re-install. :thumbs:
