I sprayed my carpet on the door panels with the exact same SEM black vinyl paint that the rest of the panel was sprayed with. I think I did the carpet edges first and then worked into the carpet body and then sprayed the rest of the panel. I also sprayed into the pocket pretty good with it pulled out to be sure I got it all.
It turned out beautiful. The carpet will look more flat than the rest of the panel and it comes out looking great. I highly advise it to paint rather than replace for cost savings. Spent your money on other items.

I tried dying the carpet on my 78 pace car door. Did not come out very well. I took my time and removed the carpet from the door, cut a new piece from the extra I got when I ordered the carpet kit and glued it in place. Looks great and you can't tell.

You can replace the carpet pieces on the door panel with new ones of your color choice. Theyre not that expensive. We replached the ones on our 73. Just another option in case you didnt know.

The earlier door panels look like it would be no problem to replace the carpet. the panels in question are for a '79. I tried taking out the carpet on an old LH door panel and I couldn't get it out without damaging the stitching. I have two used ones that are leather doeskin color and I want to dye them black. Dying the leather is no problem, but I am assuming the carpet is nylon. Will the Black shoe polish run or rub off on your clothes etc... ? How about commercial carpet dyes for the home?

I have used the sem black on the door panels and it works great. I have noticed that it rubs off on the arm rests- so you may want to purchase those in black
