Default Started question

This might be a dumb question, but shouldn't the gear on the starter and flywheel mesh together? there is like a 1/4 inch between the two :(

I believe the gear on the starter moves into the flywheel when you turn the ignition to "start" then moves away once you release the key. Otherwise the started would always be spinning while the engine runs.

Not sure ‘bout your starter ill_ d but there is a couple of spec's for mine. Just bought a brand spank’n GM mini and the instructions require 0.100”±0.040” between face of bendix gear and face of flywheel. Also called for 0.040”±0.015” between teeth when gear meshed in flywheel – and 0.040 just happens to be diameter of large paper clip. :yesnod:
