started gutting interior...questions and pictures...
well, today i bought a complete carpet set (dark saddle 80/20)
new floor mats...
a complete (painted) compartment frame and doors (ready to go)
2 doeskin door panels with dark saddle carpet on the bottom...(custom order)
6 cans of doeskin stain...
ok...so i started striping out the old today and below are some pix with questions...can any of yall help me out? thanx :)
what is the little red plastic plug? and i was suprised to find this little "carvern" beneath the carpet near the door, what is that for?
what is this foam appearing stuff with a plastic film over it? is this normal?
what can i tell, if anything, from these shots of my windsheild frame?
does this mean that its good or do you have to see it from the windsheild side to tell?
thanx!

yeah, OK.
I see one picture and no questions. You may need to repost, etc.
BUT, you should install some kind of heat shield while you're in there.
and take your time.
That's about it...

Alright, here's what I've learned from my experience . . .
1. The orange plugs . . . who knows, maybe some sort of drain plug :) . My car had them there and they didn't look like they needed to be taken out, so I left them there. The caverns in the floor, I'm guessing were for the old lap belt only type seat belts in previous years (my car has them too). That's where the retractor was hidden, maybe, only guessing here.
2. That "foam" thing is like hardened clay. I would suggest not moving it! Mine are rock hard and break really easy. The previous owner of my car did some Bubba stereo work and destroyed the driver's side one. It's the ONLY thing I couldn't find at the big Carlisle show so I was left with no choice but to leave the busted up one in there to support the carpet.
3. From what I can see, your windshield frame looks OK. As a matter of fact, it's better looking than mine was before I cleaned it up and hit it with the POR 15.
Your interior will look nice all new!! Good luck with the carpet.
Matt

Re: started gutting interior...questions and pictures... (SIGNGUY)
Having torn my 79 apart, yours looks to be in good shape(from what I see). I don't know specifically the plug is for...leave it.
The recessed area on the floor is the seat belt retractor cavity.
Yes, the foam/tan plastic is suppossed to look that way, mildly flexible, it is the sound insulation blanket.
The winshield/doghouse framing looks OK, no rust bleeding thru...but, than again, these aren't the more notorious areas for rusting.
What will you be insulating the interior with....going to reuse the stock material or going spaceaged with the likes of dynamat, etc.? Mike

Matt...you're welcome to my insulation, I removed it and its in (2) one piece, somewhat flexible and I won't be reinstalling it. If interested I'll double check its condition since its been awhile since I had taken it out. Mike

The plug is just there to plug a hole in the rocker rails, these were used on the assembly jig and is th plug is left out, water will come into the interior from under the sill plates
So anyone have a spare set as my car didn't have those as well as the foam insulation :) :D
You topside WF looks good, now go take a pic of the no 2 body mount and a pillar down in the foot well, that'll tell you more about the condition it is in

Join the club signguy, doing the same to mine right now.
1. yes mine had the little orange plugs also, my guess is drain plugs.
2. mine also had the foam with plastic over it. I trashed it.
3. The frame looks in great shap, mine was about the same.

i see that you dont have that plastic covered foam over the rear fender wells either...did you remove it too or was it not there?
also...what about the jute that is stuck to my floor boards?
i see that some of you dont have that either...
shoud mine stay or go?
i hate to remove it cause it IS more heat/sound barrier but will the new carpet and jute fit well with it there?
i think it stays cause it seems attached and my exsisting carpet also has jute on it...
also Twin_Turbo...you said...

do you mean along the front door jam and by the kick panel?

He is talking about the area behind the kick plates. That is where the #2 body mounts are, if they look like mine did than you have big problems (Check out my web page). I would suggest checking out the #3 mounts while your at it. they are seen from the wheelwell access panel between the door and the rear tires. As nice as the rest look to me you should be in good shape but worth the time to check it out.

Re: started gutting interior...questions and pictures... (SIGNGUY)
To change the body mounts you will need to lift the body at least 4-6 inches. There is a list of what has to be done to do this on my web page (I had to pull my body off completely). It can be done using a floorjack doing one side at a time if the rocker channels are in good shape.

ok...i took pix of my body mounts today and three of them dont look too bad but the left front dosnt look all that great...
whataya think...? the rubbers all look cracked from the bottom...
if i dont want to replace them right now is there something i can do in the mean time to hold this rust at bay...
can i replace the bolts and washers without lifting the body and keep the rubbers for a while, they dont seem all that bad...
RIGHT FRONT
LEFT FRONT
LEFT REAR
no pix of right rear...
while i was under there i took pix of the gas tank...
i thought it looked pretty sweet for the original... :yesnod:

Signguy yours looks to be in good shape. When I tore my carpet out my padding was actually moist and was retaining water so I trashed it. Also the two pieces on each rear side covered in plastic was still there. I trashed them (actually used them as a template for the Reflectex then trashed them) hoping to get rid of that musty smell in the 20+ year old car. Just curious, where did you get your carpet? I'm going to be ordering some this winter.

If you can measure the OD on that plug I might have them. We have various sizes down at the shop we throw away.

good luck! the interior will definitely look 100% better when its all new....my dad is a great upholstry guy, and he had the interior out of the 74, probably 15 times...in and out just to get all the gauges working right, windows aligned, and power windows to work properly...no short cuts in C3s to any of that.
