Help me choose a motor!
I'm definitely going small block....how do these specs sound? I'll probably go fuel injection...but i'm not going to count out a good carb either. This is the LT-1 383 i was looking at from golenengines. With these specs, will it be a gas hog? how would performance be with a muncie 4speed and 3:73 gears? i figure with that low lobe separation on the cam, it will be a nice idling motor. definitlely want something to sound nice from the sidepipes. Like i was saying in my other post, i want a good performer, but being modest, i'm not taking the vette to the track nor do i want to race mustangs to prove a point.

I think the compression is a bit high for pump gas,and I'd definately get something in writing if that's the intention. I run just over 10.1:1 and on hot days if I dial in too much timing I can hear the pinging. The combo seems fine other than that though.
BTW I was getting 15.5 mpg with my 406 prior to the 700r4 trans swap.

Not to sound dumb.... but you do know that's an SB2 (1992-1996) LT1, right? I've never heard of someone carbing one and putting sidepipes on it, but maybe I'm wrong.....

Are you building this motor or buying a complete long block? I think the compression along with the rpm range of the cam would make this a bear of a daily driver. You might look in Jegs at the GM performance motors and find a better combo. The Fast Burn 385 looks good for a street motor . Lot of cash . If you can build a engine your self the cost is about 1/3 of a ready built .Just my observation.

Looks like a pretty streetable 1 hp per cube or a little more motor. Do not worry about the cam, not anywhere close to being too big, the compression may want 92 + octane especally with a short duration cam and high flowing heads.
Looks good to me, should be lots of fun :chevy

The AFR heads are available with 74cc chambers(That's what I got) and that should drop your compression to closer to 10.0:1,and the cost is the same for the heads.By all means stroke it,it's the cheapest power booster there is.

I suppose this chart needs some explanation. It shows the increase in power in % of a C/R increase. EXAMPLE: If the original CR is 9:1 on right of chart & it is increased (A line) to 12:1 (B line) on left of chart, then the increase in power is about 4.5%.

Agree he should stroke it.

i never thought about the year 92-96. but on their site, they make this motor for carb or fuel injection. i agree with everyone else...compression is too high for me. i like ZZ4, may go that route, but i want a stroker.

Neat chart ,but did you notice at 10.0 to change to 11.0 the increase was only 1.5%.That's 5 hp and possible pinging.I'd rather leave a few ponies in the barn and be able to run the snot out of a motor on pump gas, than risk the extra and end up crying. :yesnod:

Separate from that, does the block and/or cam have provisions to run a distributor? LTx motors used the dreaded "Opti-crap" for the ignition system.

I wrote to Scoggin-Dickey Re: the ZZ383. They still have no details from GM about it. Originally they had mentioned the end of September, but that's already past. Here's the rumors that I've heard about it: Similar (or maybe the same) shortblock as the HT383, bigger roller cam, Fastburn heads. However, I believe that the Fastburn heads have raised exhaust ports, so they won't work with our Hooker sidepipes. Nothing has been confirmed that I've seen, so I'm in the same situation as you.... waiting for details. (and I want a stroker too!!!)

Yes, they do. Just buy the GMPP manifold, distributor, and run run run.
