Luggage Rack Opinions
I think I have found "The One" I've been looking for, 72 Orange convertible, except it has a luggage rack.
I'm asking for pro and con opinions on luggage racks.
Honestly, its hopefully not going to be a deal breaker, but I'm kind of turned off by it.
Thanks!

Although I dont ever use my luggage rack. I wouldn't take it off.
I personally think that it breaks up the plain rear deck with some good lookin chrome. It does make it harder to wash, but I wouldn't change it.
I certainly wouldn't add a luggage rack if there wasn't one, but I like mine just the same. Kinda gives it that touring sportscar look.

I don't care for the looks of the luggage rack (it ruins the sleak look of the rear deck), but I would not let it be a deal breaker. You can always remove the rack and put rubber plugs in the holes until it is time for paint.

They look great on verts but I do not like them on coupes...As the other person said it helps to break the long rear deck up and adds chrome and is useful as well

Re: Luggage Rack Opinions (markyerger)
My '72 coupe has the rack and I personally like the look it gives to the rear deck for the car's vintage. You and others may see the rack otherwise.
I too wouldn't add it if it weren't there originally (they weren't factory installed but a dealer accessory) but you have to go back to the times when a luggage rack made owning sports cars like MGBs, Austins, Corvettes and other two seaters with inadequate trunk space useable for everyday transportation. Back then it was pretty common to see these cars on the highway with -gasp!- luggage tied down on the rack. Granted, most of us don't cross-country our cars so the racks are more of a reminder or reflection on Americana back then.
But I don't see how the rack would be a deal-breaker since it's simple enough to remove it and glass over the mounting holes.

I disliked the rack on my car from the first time I saw it and knew eventually it had to go. Well that is all over and done with now and I couldn't be happier to see it finally off the car. Buy the car and ditch the rack. :yesnod:

I like them. I would not add one to my car, but it would not be a deal killer for me.

Don't make it a deal breaker for sure---I took mine off my 75 but I also stripped it downfor new paint--I also put glass nose and rear and glassed them in for the seamless look-took all the emblems off and even the door locks--it your opinion....

Re: Luggage Rack Opinions (markyerger)
Love the color and love the luggage racks (my Opinion). It fills that flat void space of the rear deck nicely and is also a functional part of the car as well. Probably use mine on the cruise to Ocean City, MD this weekend!

1972, Ontario Orange, Dark Saddle 350, TH400, Hookers, 2.5" exhaust w/Flowmasters, Edelbrock performer intake, Pertronix Electronic ignition, Pertonix Flame Thrower Wires, Rapid Fire Plugs, K&N. To Come near future: Aluminum Radiator, Rebuild of 350, New Transgo reprograming kit for the TH400, Suspension upgrade. Long Range Plan: Complete body off Restore. If I ever sell it or get in the nastalgic mood I still have all the originals down to the original AM/FM Stereo (a 72 option).

Re: Luggage Rack Opinions (markyerger)
The first thing I did, when I got my Vette home, was take the rack off. Then I sold the chrome monstrosity for the ungodly price of, I think, $20.00 All original with fasteners etc.
That's how badly I wanted the friggin thing out of my garage and out of my site. Listen, I love the 70's, I'll listen to ABBA if it's on the radio. I'd even throw on a leisure suit, if I was headed to a 70's nostalgia party. But keep the freaking chrome luggage racks off my performance car.
Just MHO.

Re: Luggage Rack Opinions (markyerger)
I do like mine. I use it for the tops for longer trips. I might even get it re-chromed soon. I like the extra chrome and think it looks great.

Re: Luggage Rack Opinions (OHSIXX)
I personally like the extra chrome on the rear. Mine was removed when they repainted the car (previous owner) and the holes were filled in. I got the rack as part of the boxes of misc. parts. I cleaned and reinstalled it since it was a stainless rack.

Re: Luggage Rack Opinions (markyerger)
I like the rack, and have used it many times. I even took the car camping a few times and the extra utility the rack provided was helpful.
Like many have suggested, if you don't like it, just take it off and fill the holes.

Re: Luggage Rack Opinions (markyerger)
After some debate, I just had my luggage rack removed when getting a full paint job. The cost for filling in the holes was only around $150 in the end.
So if you buy the car and decide to remove the rack later on it shouldn't bankrupt you (assuming you're going to paint it at some point).

Re: Luggage Rack Opinions (markyerger)
We make good use of our rack. On long weekend trips, well you know how some women pack. No way we could fit everything in the rear compartment. Its definatly usefull for us. Theyre very common. I would guess more C3's came with them then ones that did not.
