Default No Fire!!!???

Put a new rebuilt 350 in my '71... pulled the working distributor out of the old engine, dropped it in the new engine... yep, no spark. I brought the #1 cylinder top dead center (by turning until pressure pushed my thumb away from cylinder)I have fire going to the dist, but just wont hit a lick. Any ideas guys? (It's obvious by now I dont even qualify as a mechanic wannabe I'm sure) the tach wire and the batt wire are connected to the dist.

thanks in advance.

Are you running an HEI or points/coil type distributor?

And what are some more of the symptoms? Is it backfiring through the carb when you crank it (which would make me think you've got it 180 out)? Is there spark at the plugs (use insulated pliars and ground one of the spark plug wire while you crank)? If there's no spark at the plugs, could be condenser or points. How do you know you have fire going to the distributor from the coil? Is the wire from the coil to the points secure?
