Default Rebuilt Brake Calipers - Beware of Your Vendor

Before you buy rebuilt calipers, please see my web site. It's not a pretty site, but it might save you some headaches.

No, just an unhappy buyer. I put Autozone in as a link, because I've had good luck with their warranties. Go anywhere you want, I just recommend that you stay away from Muskegon Brake.

:iagree: i would not buy from muskeon either, had similar experience few years ago. I have and will continue to buy from Auto Zone, had no problems with their calipers or returning items, have not had to return them yet and it has been about 5 years. :D And no, I do not work for and am not affiliated with them in any way.

i'll let you in on a little secret.
my calipers were sleeved 10-88.
Lifetime warranty.
Do i send them back when they leak?
No.
they need cleaning every 5 to 10 years.
so i clean them.
one of the easiest repairs on a vette.
i would only send them back if a sleeve failed.
not likely

I bought 4 calipers from Discount Auto, 2 backs late last year and 2 fronts last month. Both lifetime warranty. If they EVER fail, just take em back and get new ones. I'd much prefer to shop locally so I can return stuff locally, if needed. What could be better?

there is no reason to ship :iagree:
most people would rather swap them than clean or rebuild.
Had a PS pump leak and DAP swapped it N/C.
Big chains figure you will sell the car. Wrong!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news BUT in my opinion YOU are wrong!! The "sleeve" is guaranteed not to leak not the seal and after 11 years don`t you think it was time to rebuild them??? I do.

The fronts are original and they don't leak. Please read the warranty on my website, it doesn't just apply to the sleeves. And no, I don't think they should have to be rebuilt after 11 years.

Feel free to purchase your calipers from Muskegon Brake. It's your money.

Interesting situation. I have dealt with Dave and Shawn Fox at Muskegon without issue. I've had a couple of minor problems with orders and they always handled them without a fuss. I have used their calipers for about 15 years now and have recommended them to others without any problems.
Now I'm not saying you didn't have a problem or that they mis-handled your account, but given the amount of orders that are generated here for them I would be very surprised if others have had similar experiences? We would have seen more negative posts about them in the past. Were you able to speak with Shawn Fox about this?
As for the Autozone calipers I have never used them. I believe, and someone out there help out, that there were quality issues with their source in the past. I recall this being discussed here over the years on this forum. Maybe the people involved will relate their experiences if they're still here?
As for ss calipers failing, I have had some fail. Prior to using Muskegon I used SSBC calipers and some from a Tech Automotive in Bridgewater, MA(20+ years ago). One failed because the brake fluid absorbed mositure, turned to "mud" and lockup a piston. My fault for not bleeding the system after a couple of years. At the time I returned the caliper to SSBC figuring it was covered under their warranty but recieved a bill for $45+shipping at the time. The ss sleeves were fine, the rest wasn't covered under warranty. Live and learn I guess.
I'm not trying to start a flame war with you, just explaining personal experience with SS calipers in general and Muskegon Brakes, whom I still buy from.
I wish you luck with your car.

Yes, I corresponded with Shawn and his help was no better than Dave's. They say it is was caused by excessive run out and that was that. Obviously, they were willing to risk losing a customer over a few dollars worth of parts.

Had I bought them from Autozone, or any other reptuble dealer, I would have a replacement caliper and be driving my Vette. One thing to mention, Shawn did finally send me an old piston to replace the one they kept.

Are Autozone calipers any better? I don't have an answer for that yet. However, if I only get another 11 years on their part, at least I know that a warranty replacement is waiting for me.

I`m sorry but I disagree Corvette calipers need to be rebuilt or converted to o-ring type seals. $6 worth of seals (per caliper) would of fixed the problem.

Hello

I also was under the impression, that stainless sleeved calipers do not need any further rebuild anymore, except for seal replacements.
In this case, I understand that the caliper sleeve has a groove, or ?
When I converted my already stainless sleeved calipers to the O-ring type piston setup, I also noticed this discollorisation inside the sleeves. I could not feel any groove, just some discollorisation, I guess from the alu pistons touching the sleeve wall .
My brakes are not leaking with the new O-ring setup.
The O-ring kit is 100 $ for all 4 calipers. ( pistons + O-rings )
Future O-ring replacement will be cheaper as the pistons can be kept.

Oh yes, I always wondered about the live time warranty bu...tt.
This is not commonly offered over here in Europe at all.

I dont know. Lifetime warranty should mean lifetime warranty. This covers "materials under normal use for the period of ownership." Pretty bold statement.

If Muskegon really wants to be correct, they should put an exclusion clause in the warranty that says seals wear out and must be replaced in X amount of time.

We as corvette guys understand whats all involved with dealing with the brakes. My personal opinion is the OEM seal should be discontinued for safety's sake and only O-ring seals offered.

If I was Muskegon, I would have honed the sleeve and put in a new piston seal and be done with it and start working on an exclusion clause to the warranty for fututre references.

Its not black and white and never will be I suppose.

I rebuilt my own with VBPs O-ringers + put on SS sleeved braided flex hoses + installed a new power booster + new MC + bled them all myself.

The point has nothing to do with what we do, its what Muskegon does as a vendor. All I'm agreeing to is a normal use lifetime warranty is a lifetime warranty the way I read it. If its really not, dont offer it.

I bought my calipers, rotors, m/c, hoses, etc from MB, and havn't had any problems. Also bought a steering control valve and cylinder, and after installing the valve, it leaked. Called Dave, he said to send it back and he would send out a new one and pick up the shipping both ways. That's pretty good all the way to Hawaii. MB and Dave have always been helpful and courteous and I recommend them.

I'm bewildered, i've never had any issues with MB...though I did tear the calipers appar two years ago, and replaced the seals. Just a precautionary measure, the calipers did not leak.

Another vote for AutoZone calipers here. Replaced the rears on my 71 about 6 months ago. The old ones were non rebuildable because the casting was cracked. I am sure I would have had core charges from MG, VBP, or Ecklers. AZ was the cheapest out of everyone I could get a price from, best warranty and very convenient, had them in stock and you don't have to worry about shipping. The 71 has never stopped so good.

Side note: just today I returned a battery to AZ I had bought over 5 YEARS ago.(7 year warranty) The battery had to be replaced late at night so the replacement did not come from them. No problem, they gave me the pro-rated balance in cash.
