There are forumulas, which I don't know... They obviously assume that you keep accelerating past the 1/8th mile mark. I like to calculate a "lower boundary" which is how fast you would cover the second 1/8th of a mile if you simply maintained your speed you were going at the end of the first 1/8th mile.... so what was your speed? If you were going 90mph, and remained at 90, you would cover 1/8th in 5 seconds flat... If you were going 100 mph, you would cover the 1/8 mile in 4.5 secs... Nobody else looks at it that way, so don't worry about it! MJ

....with a properly set up car
But cars that run the 1/8th are set up VERY differently then cars that run the quarter.

Why? They are as different as apples and oranges. No relationship

Basically it is the gearing. When you set up a drag car you want to be at the redline in high gear as you cross the finish line. With a car set up for running the 1/8th mile you will be at redline/high gear at the 1/8th mark, then to go on for the quarter you will keep running flat out and not increasing speed for another 4 to 5 seconds to cover the second 1/8th mile. Hope the engine can hold together that long at max rpm's. A car set up for the quarter is geared to be at the redline in high gear at the 1/4 mile mark. To do this it is giving up performance in the first 1/8th mile to enable it to run the second 1/8th mile.

The above is only looking at the gearing. The suspension set up and line launch is much more important on the 1/8th then the quarter so the setup will be different there. So you are looking at two very different set ups.

They are certainly not apples and oranges. Unless you are a pro they are set up almost identical except the 1/4 guys use one more gear. Most sportsman guys run both the 1/8th and the 1/4 with the same car. In my car I have it set up to be at max rpms in 3rd at the 1/8th and max rpms in 4tht at the 1/4.

If you are able to get the car down the track without terrible traction issues 1.54 to 1.57 times your 1/8th times is pretty accurate.

Of course, the initial question begs the "why race at an 1/8th mile track AT ALL" reply???
The only answer I can think of is there is no 1/4 mile track to race at.

Sorta like guys that post their times at 60 feet. Who friggin cares? The time at the END of the 1/4 mile is the one that counts. Everything else is just mental masturbation (mind games).
