I smell gas..
I have a 1978 Pace. Some days when I enter the garage, I have a slight fuel smell. It does not always smell like gas, the smell will come and go. It happens even days after I have driven the car, so it is not a factor of running the engine. The way I figure it, it is either (1) the vented gas cap blowing off fumes or (2) a buddy of mine said it the fuel in the floats of the carb that leaks out over time.
Anyone else have this problem and diagnosed it?
The 1978 Pace is the only vehicle in the garage, so it is definately it that is gassy! :lolg:

My garage would smell like that for 2-3 days after I drove it. After I checked the gas cap (no rubber gasket) and the lines from tank to carb, I discovered I had a leaky carb.

I had a fuel pump leak. Smelled gas for about a week. Checked under the car several times and found nothing leaking. Did notice some stains on the fuel pump but no active leak. Next day found a puddle under the fuel pump. Apparently the diaphragm had a small leak and then got bigger. Something to look for.

Why do you have a vented cap???? Shouldn't it be sealed and have a valve on the tank that returns vapour to the carb?????
I have had untold problems with fuel siphoning through the vapour cannister on my '71 due to a bad valve at the tank (it's positioned lower than the overflow)......
......my point is you're going to have to check every line, pump, connection, filter and valve in the fuel delivery system, and that includes your emissions control (or lack of it if it's been disconnected) to find the culprit......
The two things you don't want to ignore in any car are fuel smells and bad brakes.......

Re: I smell gas.. (standup)
I had a fuel smell. I had fuel spilling when I jacked the car. It was a bad return line on the top of the tank. It can be changed without dropping the tank.
The wife was always complaining about the fuel smell. No more.
