Fired up the Big Block, open headers sound great !!
I set the valves (.21) and checked for leaks this morning. After everything looked cool, I bumped the key, nothing, advanced the distributer a hair bumped the key and instantly the beast came to life. After 10 minutes into breaking in the cam I noticed a pool of oil (about 1-1/2 quart) underneth the rear of the engine, so I aborted. Being that it only leaked when under load It's pressure related. It wasn't dripping but a steady run so I'd guess it's the rear cam plug. The oil flowed too fast for it to be a rear seal (unless I completely blew the rear 1 piece seal out which I doubt). I'll be pulling the 4spd, bellhousing, ect. off to see the problem. Other than that she sounded great, no rattles, strange noises, nothing.
I must say the cam has a nice lope to it, but nothing really radical. Of course I only brought it up to 2,500rpms at the most, can't wait to hear it at 6,500rpms. :D
So she's coming slowing but surely.

I know the sound you speak of all too well :) . I liked the sound so much that I never even bothered putting mufflers back into the side pipes. Good luck tracking down the oil leak...I'm sure it's nothing major  .

I just fired mine up last night, nothing compares to the sweet thunder of a BB!!! Hope you'll find the cause of that oil leak soon.

I drove mine around for a week with open headers while I was having the battery box reglassed.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet sound.
I am sorry. . . .what did you say?
When I had the Flowmaster 40s installed, I thought they sounded pretty wimpy. Everybody on the Forum had me so paranoid that they would be too loud. They are quite tame in my opinion.

 Glad to hear you got it fired up. Are you using the Felpro oil pan gasket? Maybe you have the same problem as Steve Straus.
You sound like Bence now...."This cam doesn't sound too radical." :D

1) I had to put teflon tape around the drain plug, it had a slow leak
2) I'm going to have to cut the dipstick tube and dipstick. It's a generic tube (for all Moroso pans), and with a full pan (6qts) it hardly shows in the stick
So I upped the ante and fired mine up, so now it's your turn. :yesnod:

I'm 50% finished getting my Para-medic certification (my 3rd college degree , I feel like I'm never going to finish school). I'm not wanting to work in the field (riding the ambulance) but I need the certification in order to be employed as a safty engineer for one of the major oil companies. My dad has 30yrs w/ Shell Oil, so he's giving me a little guidance on what to do/not to do. I'll finish up this coming Summer.

Thanks for the info Corey. So, other than the dipstick issues any other problems? Any clearance issues with the headers, oil filter or anything else?
Thanks again, Mark

Thanks again Corey!
I was wondering how deep the stock GM 6 qt oil pan is that comes with the 454 & 502 crate motors?
The specs on your pan say 8" deep. The Milodon pan says 8 & 1/2" deep.
I measured my stock Gen IV just now under the car (granted the iron heads are removed) and it appears to be about 7& 1/2" deep and a little more where the drain plug is. That measures to be 5 & 1/2" clearance to the ground. Add in the heads, intake, exhaust and maybe it drops to 5" perhaps less but I doubt it as I have a very stiff suspension.
My point is figuring out how much clearance I would have if I just kept the pan that comes with the crate motor. If say, the GM pan was 9 & 1/2 " deep then it might be tight to say the least. If less, maybe I can save the $ and hassle of having to change out the oil pump, pick-up, dipstick, etc.
Did you have the stock oil pan installed in your car at all before?
Thanks again. Sorry for so many questions.
Regards, Mark

Re: Fired up the Big Block, open headers sound great !! (Corey 68)
Thanks again Corey,
I forgot, in order to get my "stiff suspension" I spoke of ( consisting of the'Vette brakes Complete Street Slalom Kit) the car has been essentially lowered an inch or two already.
The Moroso sounds like the best pan. GM Perf dealers seem to be selling the Milodon.
What actually needs to be changed out?
1) Pan for sure.
2) Pick-up of course. Bolted to oil pump or tack welded?
3) Oil pump ? Sounds like the Melling M77 or Melling M77HV is recomended but that may be on a Gen IV. I know my first engine had that oil pump in it.
4) Gasket? Is this new Gen V/VI gasket re-usable?
5) What about the crank scraper? Optional?
6) Windage tray?
Then there is mention of main cap nuts. I assume for the scraper and/or windage tray. Does this mean you have to undo the main bearing bolts to install the scraper & tray? That seems a bit extreme so I guess there is some other method of attaching them that I don't know about yet.
Thanks for the help and offer of the pix. I don't think they will be necessary as your pan would only be adding a 1/2" to my set-up. That would not be a clearance problem. I would like to keep the standard BB Chevy starter/solonoid. Only other thing is I will be running the 1 &7/8" Hooker Super Comp headers under there. Car is a 4-spd, L-36, 1969 ragtop in need of a reliable motor.
I won't be responding to any answer tonight as I am off to bed.
Thanks for the help. I do appreciate it!!!

Congrats!!!!! Must be a great feeling, I wouldn't know. ;) Glad to hear you found the source of your leak too.
