Default gas cap problems

I am working on a 73 for a friend that has sat for 20 years. I cannot get the key to turn in the gas cap. Any ideas before I get physical with it? I tried 3-in-1 oil to no avail.

I found that "PB Blaster" is a super penetrant. Might want to try to soak it with that a day or two.

I would try a liberal amount of silicone lock spray and "rake" the key in and out real fast to get it lubed up good. After 20 years I can only imagine what the inside of the gas tank is going to look like.

If it comes to it, and i hope it doesnt, you can take them off with a flat head screw driver and a hammer. I was tought this when I lost the only key to my aftermarkey gas cap, its black plastic and has 3 handle parts. You take the screw driver and put the tip of it in the key hole then a few quick blows to the handle of the screw driver with the hammer and presto. But id would puor some liquid wrench or spray it with WD40 twice a day for quite some time first if it were the orgional.

I dont know what the original cap looks like. this is a large chrome cap(2.5 - 3 in. ) with no markings and a keyhole in the center.

Sounds just liike the one on mmy '69. Also sitting for 15+ years. A little silicon spary, let it sit for a day and use the key.

Well I got it off. I had to drill out the lock cylinder. Even with a huge screwdriver it took about 10 min of messing with it. Thanks for all the input!

BTW The owner must be under a lucky star. The tank doen's have any gunk in it. I couldnt believe it.
