[GEEK] THE YEAR OF THE VIRUS......BEWARE.....
The Year Of The Virus?
It sure seems that way. The latest threat you need to watch out for is the Swen virus. This one masquerades as an e-mail from Microsoft that, conveniently enough, includes a security patch as the attachment. (It looks legit too - check it out):
http://www.worldstart.com/swen.htm
The sender goes under various names including MS Technical Assistance, Microsoft Security Center, Internet Security Department (Division, or Center), Microsoft Security Bulletin. The subject line might say: Newest Security patch, Upgrade, Latest Security Upgrade, Microsoft Update, Current Internet Patch, Current Net Critical Upgrade. We received about a dozen of these every day, but fortunately our anti-virus software catches it.
Oh, it also can arrive appearing as an undelivered message; so don't open any attachments from mysterious, undelivered message senders, OK?
Regardless of how it arrives, if you run the attachment you get to join the thousands of victims already infected.
Once it invades a computer, it worms its way into your address book, then sends itself to your e-mail contacts. (And I'm sure your friends will love getting infected email). Next, it'll throw up the occasional error message asking for your e-mail info (servers, passwords, etc). If you give that info to the virus, it'll log onto your e-mail server and delete everything it can find.
Once activated, it will attempt to make your day even worse by trying to disable any anti-virus or firewall software you're running.
Some guidelines to remember when dealing with these type of e-mails:
1. Software companies do not send patches via e-mail (repeat this several time out loud).
2. Just because it looks legit doesn't mean it is. Check the company's web site.
3. A patch this tiny from Microsoft? Please...
Remember - be careful out there. These virus writers are getting more creative by the millisecond.

I got the Email yesterday. I almost installed it before I thought about it. Must keep your guard up. It looked so official.
