Hopefully you can get access to a hoist and take a good look under there, one of the nice things that I have found with our C3's is that while ease of access to some areas may be a bit restrictive I have always been able to quickly identify the culprit. I get some banging under tha passenger seat but that is caused by a very poor exhaust install (pipe bending) that vibrates and bangs against the crossmember. When I finally install the x-pipe I will have that fixed.

Usually when you put an automatic in gear the rpms are reduced. If you have any roughness to the idle it will cause the exhaust pipes to shake. If the pipe clamps on the crossmember are loose the pipes will rattle. A quick check should show the problem.

The exhaust pipes go through holes in the crossmember. If the center bracket that holds them in the center is missing,or broken the pipes will hit the crossmember and transfer the drivetrain vibration to the car. A severely crushed down trans mount will also allow the pipes to hit as the hanger is bolted to the trans.
