Has anyone heard of a back-fire through the carb and have a K & N or other type of air filter like this catch on fire? Those ones coated with oil.

I suppose it could happen, but in a stock air filter housing the air filter is about three inches or more away from the intake bores, so I personally have never heard of a K&N airfilter catching fire. I have a K&N in my 79.

I ahd mine catch fire, but not from a backfire, but instead of a cracked fuel line, which was going to be replaced the next day, and a messed up distbutor. It sent one spark out from the cap everyonce in a while. The K&N kinda looked like a gas stove with eevn flames, once i took it off the fire got alot higher as the fuel in the carb burnt down. I dont think the oil catches fire easily cause once i pulled the filter/cleaner and removed my fingerprints there was no flame on the filter so i dont see how just a backfire would do that, but anythings possible.

I've heard of the triangular, honeycomb-looking ones being fire hazards, but never the normal circular kind.

it's possible, k&ns dont have a metal mesh plate on the inner surface of the air cleaner.

Take a normal paper air cleaner and try to light it on fire, on the side with the metal mesh covering the filter. you can't do it. It's because the metal absorbs all the heat before it can get to the paper filter, thats why its there.
