Cost of good paint job on 1973?
I am looking for an approx. cost on a high quality paint job for a 1973 convertible. Also, what is the best way to locate a high quality shop? We just moved to Wisconsin 2 months ago.
Thanks

I just paid $4500 for mine, I am totally satisfied. Pictures are here:

I would say shop around and look at the work the shop is doing on other cars. Check around in your area for any clubs, the local guys know who will do a great job for you. You might also meet some local "gear heads" at any cruise nights you might have in your town who you could ask. Try to avoid any shop that sounds like "Maaco" or "Earl Scheib" :jester

I went to the local Porsche Dealer and asked who did their Paint and Body work? So, I am leaning that way and probably looking at $6K.

If the body is straight with no real problem ares then a good job should be no more then $2,000. That is $800 for materials and 40 hours of labour @ $30 per hour. Anything above $2,000 is robbery

I would only go to a shop that has corvette experience and it really depends on what you want and how far you want to go with it. My car was taken down to the Gel coat and they had to remove 7 previous layers of paint and fix a few body parts as well....I think depending on cost of paint and # of coats and Coats of clear you will pay anywhere from 2500 to 5k

Do it yourself and save the money for other Corvette wants. Most paint shops will rent out their paint booths and equipment. It skill really isn't that hard to obtain. Plus, you'll have that much more of the car that you did by yourself!!

Depends on the kind of job you want done, You get what you pay for. My Vette is pearl yellow and I have $1300.00 in just sealer, base coat, color and clear. Does not include primers.
Good Luck  Larry

I had $1200 in liquid not counting the disposables like sand paper, polishing compound, etc.

Best advise I think is to join a local club and/or go to many of the local shows. Whenever you see a car with a good paintjob, ask the owner who did it. I found a little hole in the wall shop that way. If it hadn't been recommended I never would have gone there. The guy stripped 5 layers of paint off, repaired multiple little collision damages, reshaped the left quarterpanel from an earlier incorrect repair and painted the car including doorjambs, underhood etc. Total was $2500. Liquids alone were close to $1k (torch red, 3 coats base, 4 coats clear), and he also color sanded it after spraying.
It's not quite show quality, but pretty darn close. It was done 5 years ago and still looks great.

I noticed you are in Plano. I am in McKinney and have a 74 that I have been doing a rebuild on ground up with ZZ4. I will need a painter. Who did you use?

Just reading this thread I've seen everything from $2000-$6000. Does that include the possibility of stripping 3 coats of paint off... re-gell coating... priming... painting... and lots of clear coat for $4000-$6000? It's something I will do sooner or later and just trying to see what a quality job includes.

The last body guy I talked to was $80.00 an hour. I told him my doctor doesn't charge that high a rate and he told me when he was a doctor, he didn't charge that much either. :jester
