Oil Turns Jet Black
My car sat for 7 years before I got it. I have been faithfully changing the oil every 200 miles. The oil goes from a nice normal clear/brown color very black color before 200 miles. I dont think this is normal. Any thoughts on this and how can I clean out the system if it is full of junk.
Thanks
Mike

Have you checked compression on your engine? My initial guess is that you're getting a lot of combustion gasses blowing past the rings and contaminating the oil.

my guess would be that the carb is running rich or you have a lot of carbon build up in the cylinder heads. I would be careful with running any kind of oil
"flush" on a engine. this can lead to a spun bearing. MHO

I know of a kid at URI that could run the car for you and clean up the motor. Of course you'd have to leave it with him for awhile and you might need a new clutch when done! :D

Re: Oil Turns Jet Black (Matt Gruber)
just take a valve cover off. you will see what is in there.(sludge)
If it's getting black that quick, there is probably a whole lot of sludge in there. While kerosene/ATF/etc. flushes will desolve some of the sludge (and maybe all of it if done enough times), you'll also be running whatever abrasive crap that it contains through your engine (which you are already doing). If sludge is the culprit, removing as much as you can manually is better. If you do see a lot of sludge under the valve covers you might want to run the engine for a moment to verify that the oil return holes aren't blocked and causing oil to sit and be cooked there.

:iagree:
sludge does NOT cause any problem until chunks break off and get ground up(and plug oil passages)
quick black oil is a sign of a sludge grinder at work.
Not to be confused with slow black oil which is normal as the oil has detergent in it.

:iagree: What I'd do would be to pull the valve covers and clean up the sludge laying there. I'd then use kero to wash everything down.
Next, I'd drop the oil pan and use kero to clean everything there. While I was at it, I'd replace the oil pump and screen.
Sounds like a lot to do but I'd then know that everything should be good to go.

i did that on my 67 289. plus i pulled the intake and cleaned it and the valley. Got over 3 POUNDS of sludge!
BUT the time was way too long. 40 HOURS
So i recommend a new GM crate motor if you want a reliable car for many years. (Because i've got an old worn out motor that is clean
