An LS1/LS6 swap makes a nice car. Are you getting the PCM and other electronics with the engine? How are you going to do the transmission/transaxle? Are you going to use one of the tube frame builders and convert the suspension and running gear to C5?
You might check the number with the local DMV. There is usually a check of VIN made when a car is brought in from out of state (used car, people moving, etc). The people that do those checks could help you determine if the engine was ok.
The Derivative VIN sequence on the engine will provide the VIN of the car the engine was originally installed in. They can check to see if the car was stolen.
