454 keeps killing condensers
My 454 has developed a nasty habit of eating condensers. No real logic, it just happens, usually at idle or when off. Anybody got a suggestion?

Check your points. See if they're burned. Check the resistance across the points. Should be zero. Coil? Ballast resistor or resistor wire? Could be too much current to/through the points. Also, check for a short to ground within the distributor/points/wires. Chuck

Re: 454 keeps killing condensers (Chuck Gongloff)
hey,
Mine kept doing the same thing. finally it got so bad I would go through 1 condenser a week. I replaced the coil - no beter.
Turned out - as stated above - the wire leading from the sarter to the coil was shorting out and voltage was all screwed up.
I changed the wire and - volla - no problems.
btw ....
I changed my points/condenser assembly out for a electronic kit which fits inside stock distributor. Best thing I ever did. Revs higher - got better MPG etc ...
Hope this helps some.
