GM 454 or 502 oil pan clearance
To those who have done an install on one of these motors: Did the stock oil pan the motor comes with fit??? I seem to have read that they do fit but there are then ground clearnce issues or that they don't fit period. I don't remember.
If not, would the GM 4 qt pan work or did you go with an aftermarket pan?
Thanks, Mark

Well, I may have an answer. According to the tech at Scoggin-Dickey I talked to. The 454 or 502 will fit in Corvettes with the stock oil pan it comes with. The Chevelle's and Chevy II's require a different pan.
Anyone care to confirm this info???
Thanks, Mark

I am not the one who put the 502 in my car but it looks like the oil pan from the pics of the original crate engine. Hope that helps.

The 502 pan is 6 qts and an inch deeper than the 5 qt. Best bet is to either buy a new road racing pan or modify...section the 502 pan....you will bottom out....I have...so...I did both...bought a road racing pan and I sectioned one inch from the 502 pan.

How are you with JB Weld? Seriously, unless you have 29" clearance on the top of the front wheel openings, pay the $150 and get the 4 qt oilpan kit from SD.

I had the stock 454/ 502 GM oil pan and w/ my #550 springs I only had a couple inches as far as ground clearance. I switched to a Moroso Kicked out sump and gained 3-4 inches in clearance.

Well, my front end has been lowered as well with the previous owners install of the complete 'Vette brakes street/slalom kit. So, the stock pan sounds like it would be a bit low to the ground.
The part number I see is for the Milodon 7 quart low profile oil pan part # MIL30955. This must be the one everyone is talking about, although I know of other brands as well.
Corey, does the pan have a dipstick? I've seen some models that do not have one. Any other issues with the install? New longer pick-up for sure. what about windage tray, etc.?
Thanks, Mark
