Low cost rev-limiters?
I'm thinking of adding my own rev-limiter circuit to my MSD shift light.
Just a relay that puts a low ohm resistor from coil neg. to ground. Will induce severe misfire.
Any other ideas?

I wouldn't save money on a good rev limiter.. Especially in my case - when powershifting - I need a rev limiter that works good... and the limiter in the MSD 6AL works just perfect...

is this for your 1972?
If you're still running points in your stock distributor, you can buy the Crane pointless igintion conversion module. It has a built-in selectable rev limiter.

actually it's for my 61. been using the shift light and it works great, but i am thinking of a solid cam and that could make revs way too high on a missed shift. it has electronic ignition. That crane is ok i guess, but i won't use that type of trigger

after reading over and over how guys here wire their coil with too much resistance,and then complain IT WONT REV UP
i figure a rev-limiter doesn't have to be fancy or expensive to be 100% reliable.
I've got a wire wound 8 ohm variable resistor(speaker fader) and some relays from old vcr/stereos so it won't cost a cent to hook it up and try.
And it can double as an anti-theft device :cool:

Few things that worked for me in the past:
1. Floor mat wedged under the gas pedal.
2. Throttle cable bracket moving.
3. Fabbed up cold air intake duct work blocking tb blade from fully opening.
Of course these where all unintentional rev limiters but worked none the less.

i just wired up an old relay for a test.
i will dial in mega mis-fire and then replace the pot. with a fixed resistor.
assuming of course it works :lurk:

:cool: IT WORKS!
for a test i set my light to 3300
i floor it and it, in neutral, zooms up to 3500, comes back to 3300, won't go past 3500 :nono:
If anybody wants the resistor value, e-mail me.
a $95 rpm limiter in 1 hour with a relay from an old VCR and 1, 50¢ resistor :cheers:

Won't that extra resistance decrease the amount of spark at lower RPM's. The resistor isn't a cutoff as much it is a buildup.

the resistor isn't added until the MSD rpm swich reaches the rpm i set. the relay i added does the switching when triggered.

So right now i enjoy the shift light :cool: and don't want to convert it into a rev-limiter :nono: i want BOTH!
Seems the lowest cost to do this is to use the summit tach/w/shift light $39 and hook my rev-limiter to the light.
Example:
5500 shift light
6200 rev-limit
Two devices required :rolleyes:
