BB/SB swap, have questions
Right now i have a 350 w a th350, and just bought a 454 and a th400. I know some things need to be changed (springs, radiator). but other than those two things is there anything else that i HAVE to change just to get this thing where i can drive it. I will slowly change other things that are neeeded to hold the extra HP.
Is a th400 a direct replacement for a 350?
On the drivers side of the trand there is a single red wire coming out,,,,what is it for? (the motor/trans is out of a 78 suburban)
any help or insight on this new project of mine would be much appreciated

figured some of you might get a smirk out of these pics,,,check out page two http://www.corvettecrew.com/forum/in...y;threadid=500

The TH400 will bolt up to the BB just as easy as the SB (same mounting holes)
You'll need:
BB pulley's (pretty expensive, # correct WP pulley is $300 )
BB brackets
BB short Water pump
Hoses
BB springs(might be able to get by w/ you stock SB springs for a little while)
Since you have a '78 it should fit under your stock hood. :D

78 ..............76 :yesnod:
ill just use aftermarket pulleys
new springs when i can afford some
Does the 400 use the same driveshaft yoke as the 350,,,,,,,,,or would the driveshaft need to be shortened?
thanks for the info corey :flag

March Pulleys makes a great set of pulleys that will work for your setup.
I'm almost positive the Th350 and Th400 use the same driveshat, if not it should cost <$100 to get it shortened.
You going to LOVE that BB.

I think the 400 is longer than the 350. You might need some driveshaft work or a different one. Take a look at some of the serpentine conversions from March, Vintage air, and others.

THe single red wire is the kickdown. You will need a different driveshaft and yoke to change from TH350 to TH400.

Re: BB/SB swap, have questions (bluevetteman)
i am afraid this trans wont work without some modification to the tail housing its out of a BB 78 suburban here are some pics,,,,,,,,,,,it seems to be stout as hell but will it work? there is a bolt going through the yoke into the main shaft. Would it be possible to keep that tail housing so i can use the HD shaft and just shorten the driveshaft, the and just leave the bolt out so it can slide a little. i think the only reason the bolt is there is because on the burban there is a two piece driveshaft and it slides in and out of the unit half way back to the axle.

Mmmm - I want an old BB like that.
How much does an old BB like that set you back ?
I can't afford the $5k+ for a BB crate motor.
