Default Removing the Brake Shields

What would be the negative consequences of removing the brake shields? Are they really needed?

I don't see any problem. I think they are there to kep road debris off the rotors on dirt roads and loose gravel. May also keep road grime off the rotors.

I know it is recommended to remove them for racing...

TTT- I'm thinking about removing mine because I have the front apart right now. It appears that C4's and C5's don't use shields. Any inputs?
