Finally back to building the engine...a few shots
Well, after spending some time working aon a friends Bel-Air, which in the last 2 months I have completely rewired from scratch..installed Impala bucket seats - after recovering them.... well all this kept me from working on the vette...beyond little things like reinstalling the sidepipes...I was able today to start working on the shortblock.
I was delayed by te fact that I couldnt find my rod bolt stretch gage..so I ordered a new one. But I was able to get some things done.
Here is the crank installed. I use redline assembly lube on the bearings. After all the work on the bottome end all five mains are within .0001 of each other. ARP main studs hold it all together.
This image shows the Billet rear main seal adapter from Pace Chevy, this one allows use of any passenger side dipstick oilpan..unlike the moroso adapter which requires the 87 or later pan. This allows for a wider selection of oil pans...which tend to be cheaper as well.
You can also see the rear oil baffle under the pump. because of the fact that I used studs, it had to be modified to clear the bolts, it also had to be cleared to fit the pan. Its cut up alot more than ones I've done in the past..I'll have to decide if I'm keeping it.
Also note the Crank scraper, It is fitted to the crank throws for now, obviously when the rods are installed it will have to be clearanced form them as well. the Crank is clearanced to .040 from the scraper.
Here is the windage tray mocked into place. its a milodon part, like all my oil system parts (with the exception of the Moroso racing oil pump), the pump has all the anti-cavitation modifications to the body already done.
And of course the oil pan had to be laid on the engine just to look at it. when the rod bolt stretch gage arrives the rods will be installed. then the oil pump will be affixed and the pickup adjusted to the pan.
Next comes valvetrain.....

Lots of new motors being built right now. Keep up the good work. We will be watching for the results.

Beautiful!! Nice to see it coming along!! Its a 355, right?
I want to let everyone know that fauxrs (Eric) is VERY detail oriented with his engine building. I would have him assemble a shortblock for me ANYTIME!!!

so I'll be putting together a long rod 350 (6" rods) on a scat crank, if you want to read up on the first part of the build up - go here http://earchitect.50megs.com/corvette/Episodeone.htm

Glad to see someone still building a 355. With all the 383's and 406's everyone has forgot what a screamer a 355 can be.
Many guys at the race track still build them and I will be building another one out of my L48 that is going to be an 8000RPM hummer, once I get this 400ci stuff out of my system

Fauxrs,
Thanks for that link to your motor page. Looks great. I love the detailed work you did on it.
That motor is so clean. I would like to develop the patience to put together and engine like this!
I am going to grab that March, 2003 Chevy High Performance magazine tonight....

Fauxrs,
That engine block on your website looks VERY familiar!! As you may remember, I still have that shortblock out of my '87- the one with the rod knock in my garage. Are you planning on using the factory lifter setup?
I do want to put a motor together by myself. It would be SO satisfying to fire it up after all that meticulous work....

Factory roller cam motors are dead stone reliable and last many thousands of miles with these roller componants, and that is the reason I will use them.
You should build that motor up Bob, it is much easier than most people believe, requires only time (oh ok and a bit of money :D ) to do it right, and can be one of the most rewarding things you can do with your car.
You fabbed up a great install on that ROD-6 of yours. If you can do that, this isnt out of the realm. Keep in mind about the smallest part on an Engine is a nut. there arent that many parts in truth.... I could never rebuild a watch...but a small block...I can build those all day long and twice on sunday
read a lot of books...
find o good machine shop...
read a few more books...
start and have fun...
