Default 76 tilt steering column in a 72

Will a 76 tilt column work in a 72? I believe around 76 or 77 the columns were changed using different wiper mounted turn signal switches but is there anything esle that is different. I know 69 to 75 will fit no problem

Jim Shea should be able to tell you fairly quickly, you might check over on the Corvette Faq and see if it is mentioned in any of the papers he has published over there on Corvette steering.

I don't know if it will fit, but keep in mind that the '76 had the unique, and much maligned 1 year Vega GT steering wheel. Steering wheels from other years do not fit the column or you loose the tilt feature- I am told. I have one, and I don't mind it, but it is not as classic looking as the years before. If you are going to do the switch, you might consider another year for a donor.

The 1976 steering column is the same as the 1969 through 1975 steering columns. The steering wheel and the attaching parts were different in 1976. So if you have the hub, extension, steering wheel, telescope lock, horn contact, and horn button for the older models, the 1976 column will bolt right in.

One other thing. If you have access to a 1977 through 1982 production leather rim steering wheel, extension, hub, horn button, and telescope lock this combination will bolt right on the older columns.

The only thing that will happen is that the newer steering columns only telescope rearward 1.7 inches. The newer extensions were shorter so that they wouldn't interfere with the dimmer pivot bulge on the 1977 and newer columns.

The older columns telescoped about 2.5 inches. So with the new strg wheel, extension, and parts, if you want to telescope your old column all the way rearward (and I don't know why you would want to sit like a NASCAR driver) what will happen is that there will be a slight gap between the lower edge of the extension and the top of the steering column.

I installed a 1977 steering wheel (and parts) on my old 1976 Corvette with a T&T steering column and it looked great and worked fine.

I don't think that there's a problem exchanging steering columns on C3's.. I have a 76 steering column in my '68...

I don't know how you installed a 1976 column in your 1968. There had to be considerable modifications to the vehicle and to the column to make it fit.
The 1967 and 1968 Corvettes had the first generation energy absorbing steering column. This column was unique to the Corvette in that it used smaller tubes than any other GM steering columns.

The mounting bolts or studs are much closer together in the 68 body so that they won't match up to the capsules on the 76. Both columns have a welded bracket on the end near the floor. They are not the same. The 76 bracket is much larger. The older column is much smaller where it passes into the instrument cluster. What did you do with the lock cylinder on the 76 column as well as the a lock cylinder and ignition switch in the 1968 dash?
