My Engine Plans
Unless I get lucky and find a BB Vette worth buying in my price range, this is my plans for the motor.
383 or 377-(400 w/327 crank and rods) Forged
10.5:1 Forged pistons
AFR 210 heads (ported to 300cfm@600)
Victor jr. intake (port matched)
Holley 750 (vac sec)
Comp Cams hydraulic roller, with 236/242° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.520/0.540 in. lift
1.6 roller rockers (should raise the cam lift ratio)
This combo should still run on pump gas and produce 500 or above HP while still allowing me to use the AC. Of course a 3000 stall in a 700R4 is my trans of choice. If I calculated it all out right I should be able to drive it to the track and still runs 10s. Of course I could get greedy and spray 250 in it and theres no telling what I will run but that is still a ways away. Tha motor will cost right arouns 4000$ to build so thats not too bad.
Any opinions or thoughts on any or all of this?

Sounds like a good combo.
Nearly identical to mine...and it runs GREAT!
Mine is a 406 however.

I run the 1.6 rockers on the intake for .555" lift and 1.5's on the exhaust for .540". The I/E ratio of these heads is high, so you can gain a few hp by opening the intake a little more. This is also the basis of the arguement that with such a a high I/E ratio a single pattern cam is more effective.

As for your "total," I think that is a little low. I have over $8000 into mine, excluding the little things. :eek:

I think it will cost a little more too. We still gotta get some lifters(and hyd roller lifters are ridiculous!), machine work, gaskets, pushrods, intake, carb, dist. oil pan/pump/windage tray, balancer etc etc.
But you can really save lots of $$$ by doing shopping around and even swap meets. Houston has some good ones! Lots of small block parts out there when folks decide to move up to another level whether it's a stouter small block or whatever.

I've got a 406 that cost me $4500 to build the first time.I run a flat hydraulic cam,which I'd recommend you do as well.Once you dial in the combo,change over to roller if you want.The intake is up to you,but in all dyno pulls and build ups I'd read,the RPM is the manifold of choice up to 5000,with a single plane gaining only a few horses above that.(Like 10-15)

Moneypit, intake choice should be considered depending on which type of transmission you have. If you have an automatic, then a dual plane is a good choice. If you have a stick, then you should consider a single plane. Here's the reason: With an auto the rpms drop further when shifting so the rpms are lower in the power band. A dual plane has longer runners (much like the TPI units in the 80's) to help with torque. When you shift a stick, the rpms don't drop as far so you you don't have to be as concerned with the longer runners because your already in a higher rpm range. JOhn Lingenfelters "On modifying small-block Chevy Engines explanes this very well and has graphs soing the differences. All that said, the Edelbrock RPM intake is an excellent intake all around ;) .

I'd think about going with a double roller chain and can the idea of a gear drive set-up. I had a set come apart on a 468 that wasted the motor. Thought maybe we had broke the cam when we pulled the valve covers and none of the valve train would move when turning the engine over. It was a mess inside after taking everything apart.
