Default Fresh engine dyno results for '69 427/400

Last Friday got my day on the dyno at Tony Feil Competition engines in Raritan NJ. My stock appearing engine with stock 3x2 carbs peaked at 529 lb-ft of torque (3500) and 485 HP (5600). The only major modification was a Lunati 50247 hydraulic roller.
These guys were great to work with and Tony is a corvette owner himself. There was actually an NCRS decal on the dyno window.

Nice numbers indeed, not bad for a cam swap. Since those numbers are GROSS that would but you at around 425hp NET?

There will definitely be a loss due to acessories. On the net issue, a 60 hp loss for an alternator and water pump seems high.

Larry, it was just a guess I do not know the formula for the gross to net. :D If you are not running smog, Power Steering, or a/c, then I agree your numbers shouldn't be too far off.

For our purposes, "net" hp is irrelevant. It will be very interesting to see what RWHP is after the engine is installed.... in what BTW?? :) I was just reading an article in Car Craft about hp drop from engine dyno to chassis dyno with two entirely different setups. The message is there is no "formula", and it varies hugely depending on accessories and drivetrain, ie auto trans eats up much more hp than manual, and high performance torque converters and rear end eat up more hp than stock. Thanks to all for the comments. The engine is going in a '69 coupe with an m21 and a 3.70 rear.
Also I'm very much aware of the net vs. gross debate as a mechanical engineer. There is no ASME SAE or ANSI std. for this as there are too many variables. I always fall back on what Michael Schumacher (F1 Champ) says "Ultimately you buy or build a car for how it feels to your butt when you drive it". I'm really looking froward to 529 lb-ft of torque!

I also think it's important for other members of the forum to see actual numbers and what can be obtained without the radical cam numbers from the magazine articles etc. Most people dramatically "overcam".

Absolutely. I agree 100%, although I have found out that with a big-block it is more difficult to overcam than a smaller cubed motor. I run a cam only slightly larger than yours and I'm at 434rwhp/450rwtq w/ some AFR heads. I have no idea what these numbers would be at the flywheel or gross. My power range is about the same as yours (peak HP is at 5600, although it only drops 20rwhp at 6400rpm :) ).

I think you'll be very pleased, and have great street manners (mine is so docile, at times I wish I'd put in a bit larger cam) with great power anywhere in your useable rev-range. :D

Great numbers for an oval port tri power! You're going to have fun! I LOVE oval port 427's, They're killer. Well..OK I LOVE 427's in general!

WA2FST....TOLD YOU SO!!!

How soon we get accustomed to all the new found HP! It's like being a junky!

Not to get too sidetracked, but I was at the Super Chevy event today and saw a beautiful '69 Camaro. 540", AFR 315 heads. .690 268/272 110LSA, Victor intake and Dominator. He was running full 3" closed exhaust, power steering. auto, 4.11 gears and a set of 10" slicks. He was running 10.70's@127 all day long. He was thinking of hitting the NOS for a shot at the 9's. Neat car and another testament to AFR heads! AND big cams!

Plus even with that cam, it idled smooth and didn't sound radical at all.

You guys make one of the biggest points, the car stays highly driveable. The "funny car" vacuum levels and poor "off idle response gets old fast.
