Re: check this out!! (Robert N)
On a business trip in Germany I had the opportunity to visit a plant that manufactured these huge marine crank shafts. It was truly amazing. The forging operation was the most impressive part. Since the forgings are so large, they are shaped one throw at a time. The piece is placed in a huge furnace to heat the portion to be forged until its red hot. Then a large tow motor pulls the huge piece out of the furnace and quickly carries it over to the hammering operation where the forging hammer pounds it in to shape. Let me tell you that the ground shakes like there is an earthquake happening. When the piece begins to cool the towmotor takes it back to the furnace to repeat the cycle until the piece is completely shaped.
The funniest part of the operation was watching the towmotor operator drive like a maniac through the plant with a red hot piece of steel dangling off the front that had to weigh at least 10 tons!! Some jokester in the plant had painted "Ferrari" on the back of the tow motor in big white letters
