(DD)Hot auto trans shifts hard from 1st to 2nd...?
My DD ('97 Astro Van) has a 4 spd. automatic (3 spd. + OD). Around town, the tranny shifts as normal. However, after an extended freeway drive (1 hr. sustained @ 70mph), when I come to a stop and start rolling again, the tranny "jumps" or shifts hard from 1st to 2nd. This continues until vehicle is turned off and cools a little.
If I turn the engine off for a few mins and let it cool down, upon driving again, the tranny resumes its normal shifting.
Vehicle has towing package with external tranny cooler.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this problem?
Thanks in advance,
D. Ocean

The AodE have a lot of porblems, especially when they get up in the milage.
Here's a link to a site that has a lot of info on them

My Uncles T-bird is having a similar problem, the trans shop is going to try replacing a sensor, not sure which one as I am getting second hand info. they also told him that the aode's have mysterious problems arise from time to time.

After reading some of the articles, they mention changing fluid type to correct tranny "shudder". Wondering if this is the same problem I'm describing...maybe I'll switch fluids.
Thanks,

Hey how bout that, I thought you said Aerostar, Sorry its late and I am not on top of my game right now.
Mercon V is only for Ford AODE's don't put it in a gm.
You may have a stuck govener or something liek that.

Well...the articles on the Ford site indicated changing oil type solves certain issues, so I'll try a synthetic (Amsoil) for GM....claims to lower transmission operating temp. 20 ~ 50 degrees. As this seems to be a heat-related issue, might be a quick-fix.
My governor? Jeb Bush? Not sure if he has anything to do with my transmission...
Thanks again!
