Default JCL Spiral Turbo baffle "uncapped"

I put on my Hooker side pipes back in march or so w/o any insert at all, and boy they were loud as all heck. So i picked up of set of JCL's and threw them in with the cap on to see if I liked it before i went ahead and uncapped it....The sound "capped" was decent....still pretty loud and a nice tone.
However, before the sidepipes, I had the MAD chambered pipes and loved the sound dearly, but b/c of their slight restriction and the power that can be gained by the spiral baffles and I wanted the sweet look of the side pipes.
After about 3-4 months of having the baffles "capped" one of the tubes on my car started to slide off a little bit since the bolts came loose.... while fixing it, I decided it was time to uncap them cause I thought the car was too quiet compared to the chambered pipes and open side pipes....Well, the uncapped JCLs are SWEET! Its a perfect median between the capped inserts and no inserts at all... same sound level as my chambered pipes, but a very distinct sound that is cool IMO. at WOT they scream like my old chambered pipes and have gained the look of sidepipes and probably gained some HP.
If you are thinking about uncapping yours....just do it....sounds great!!
Funny thing is, since I uncapped them, I have driven the car more in the last week than I have almost all summer. Im back to having a :D on my face cause of the sound.

:yesnod:

I uncapped mine before installing them b/c I knew I needed/wanted max flow. I was like you...no baffles at all and it was too loud for me (although performance was easily 70hp better than with the stupid Hooker glasspacks), and I was concerned about local law enforcement. With the baffles uncapped it is nearly as loud at WOT as with no baffles, but at part throttle cruise and idle, and just normal driving it is perfect. :D

Glad you're happy with it.

I thought uncapping them was a bit too loud intially, but since I've fixed the leaky header gaskets and given myself some time, they are now perfect !!! They're not bad at idle or cruising, but WOT and people know you mean business :reddevil . JCL's are the perfect compliment to Hooker Sidemount headers :yesnod:

I've not run mine "uncapped" because when I stand on it, it does really make some noise. But I sure am curious. Without taking mine apart and looking, how do I remove and replace. Is there room to cut and weld, or is this a one-way street?

I removed mine with a cutoff wheel on my Dremel. The caps were only tack welded :) I could use my old caps again if I ever wanted to or just buy new ones (engine freeze plugs) ;) .

I still try to get my ET in the 11.70's before installing any type of mufflers into my pipes...

is this a one-way street?
The sound really is awesome uncapped. My problem is i drive my car full-time and thought it was a little too loud early morning/late night (besides i just moved to this neighborhood less than a year ago and don't want to upset my new neighbors). So i took the uncapped baffles out and plugged the exit end with a 1 1/4" bolt end threaded pipe cap and ratched them down tight. Works great, i can cap and uncap them in a few minutes with a racthet, extension and 1 1/8" socket. As a precaution i try not to "stand on it" with them plugged, but have done it several times without them failing. In the future i plan on drilling a hole through both and using a cotter pin just to make sure.

Without taking mine apart and looking, how do I remove and replace. Is there room to cut and weld
You will have to remove them from the pipes to cut the caps off.

Are JCL, and Spiral baffle specialties the same product?
http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com/

Is Mass Vette now JCL?

Just curious who is making these types of baffles these days?
C2's get it in kit form, just curious as to my options?
Have spoke with Mass Vette about these for a couple yrs now,
just looking for an up-date.
Thanks

396RAT,

JCL has a set that will work with the C2 side pipes. They really work. I only lost 6 hp going from open pipes to uncapped JCL baffles. 483rwhp vs. 477rwhp. They are a quality product, well engineered. I can't think of another $300 investment making as much power without sacrificing streetability. Guys regularly spend $400 on the C5 forum just to get 20-30hp from a cold air setup. The JCL's give me almost 100 hp for less money with my high compression, long cammed BB. Lesser engines will benefit too, but the radical engines will benefit the most.

Thanks! sent them an e-mail.
My engine is stock, aside from the side pipe headers.
11-1, solid cam, stock alum intake and orig carb.
I dont expect an extra 100 rwhp, but have to think its a much
better option than glass packs or factory chambered exhaust!
Thanks again! :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash:
