What to use to wash the block before assembly?
Anything special to use or avoid as far as detergent? Dish soap OK to use? Will wash, compressed air blow and spray protect all one right after the other either tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks

I have always heard and always used DAWN dish detergent. You know what they say, "It takes grease out of the way" :yesnod:

I second the dawn plus it leaves your hands soft and supple. :D For my initial cleaning I used some simple green first then went with the Dawn as a final.
BTW I looked at (best I could) how much I needed to remove off of the rod bolt and I have something else going on as it appears that there is a significant amount of the rod that needs to be removed for clearance which isn't right.

With only about 300 miles on it I felt it was unessary, it looks pretty much brand new but I needed to clean up the cyl walls from some surface rust from sitting. I left the cam and lifters in it so the bearings are fine and the lifters bores (proper term  ) are fine too. Just want to clean it up a touch before putting it back together.

when my block came back from the hot tank, it was full of grit in the oil passages  good thing you didn't send it out for"cleaning"

If the cylinder walls have been bored or honed you need to get ALL the grit out. Take a clean paper towel and put a little transmission fluid on it. Wipe down the walls of the cylinder. You will be amazed at how much grit is still in the walls. Keep doing this until the paper towel has no residue on this. Transmission fluid is designed to suspend dirt in it. This is why it is a good cleaner for the walls. I got this tip from my machine shop. It will take quite a few paper towels to get it clean but it is worth it. My rings seated instantly. The dish detergent is good for getting the oil off but watch for any machined surface. It will start to rust quickly. Get some oil on it before the surface rust starts.

All of the above, then use WD40 on the cylinder walls after cleaning. My block sat(is still) for months and I recoated the cylinders and head surface every couple of weeks.
