What sizes and combinations do you recommend for BB/SB applications?
I can't decide how big to go.
Thanks

It really depends on what you are doing w/the car. Do you drive the car hard? Do you take corners hard? Do you race? What year is your car?

63-67 a 1" front bar and a 5/8 rear bar is recommended

68-82 a 1-1/8" front bar and a 3/4" or a 7/8 rear bar is recommended, depending on application like spring rates and road conditions.

Are these "complete" kits (i.e. 2 bars, all brackets, linkage, and bolts)?

Thanks,
Paul

I've got a 69 small block with a 330VB fiberglass rear spring and 460 front springs. I love to take corners hard, but I don't race now, but I am considering trying out autocross. I am interested in getting a big front bar (1 1/8 or 1 1/4) but I can't make up my mind as to how big to go in the rear. I hear that if you go too big in the rear, that can make the rear end feel twitchy and I want to avoid that. I am currently running 17 inch ZR1 wheels with z rated 275-40-17 tires.
Thanks

the bigger you go the stiffer it gets. go with the 3/4" bar. If your not sure about racing, your not going to want what to over kill it

Zack,
With 1 1/8, use 5/8 - with 1 1/4, use 3/4.
See the table in the ADDCO web site to get a fell for the dramatic increase in roll resistance with a small increase in bar diameter.

Possibly you could answer a few questions.

My '80 dosen't have a rear sway bar and it has a 1 1/8 in. front sway bar. What is the reason GM didn't put the rear bar on my car ?

If I were to buy what diameter (rear) should I get for no racing or real hard cornering ?

I have heard that some Vette owners have put them on the back of cars not originally equipped with them and had control/understeer problens and they ended up taking the bars off, could you comment on this ?

What improvment will I see in handling if I put one on ?

I'll take a set - 68-82 a 1-1/8" front bar and a 3/4" rear bar.

You should still have my info.

MotorHead-
80's were not a hi-horsepower car. Thats why they were not equiped w/a sway bar. I would use a 5/8" bar for your application. I happen to have an 80 vette also. I put 5/8" bar on and it's fine. A lot of guys think they can put sway bars on and go racing. It's not like that at all. It has to do w/a lot of things. Thats probably why there cars were always understeering. If you put one on you will get less body roll.

The offer is good until the 3rd of Oct. You can always order online if you would like to. I've adjusted the price in there as well.

Went to your web site they are still priced at 124.99 for the addco anti-sway bars. Also if my 72 came stock with a front anti-sway bar would I just need to order the rear?

Go to http://www.vansteel.com You'll see a pull down menu on the upper right. Scroll down until you see sway bars and click on it. Than you have 3 options 63-82, 84-96 & 97-03. Click on 63-82 and scroll down that page. The part numbers begin with VS and they are all listed for 110.99.

Yes you can just order the rear and you'll be good w/that.

Lemme see if I can help here:
1) Base small block C3s were not built with rear sta-bars. The car performed adequately without them. There's a balance between the overall roll stiffness on the front and rear axles. The proper amount of the weight transfer needs to be on the front axle for the car to be stable while cornering (most specifically during abrupt lane changes/slalom). With a smaller front bar (or even your 1 1/8 bar) there is sufficient front load transfer that the rear bar would not have been necessary to attain the desired level of performance.
I'm not sure on the effect that the switch to radial tires had, but the load sensitivity of radial vs. bias tires may have had an impact on the need for a rear bar with a thicker front bar.
In a nutshell, a rear bas wasn't put on because the car was able to meet its performance targets at a lower cost without the rear bar.

2) Based on the experiences of people on the forum, I'd go no larger than a 5/8 bar in the rear if you have a 1 1/8 on the front.

3) If you put a big bar on the back, you can adversely affect the load transfer durign cornering. More of the load will be transferred onto the outside rear tire than before. As the load increases on this tire, it's ability to sustain a lateral force is basically lower than the front tire (weight normalized). So the rear tends to slip out before the front.

4) With a rear bar, you'll see flatter cornering. Driving at the limit, you might see higher lateral g's, quicker lap times in an autocross course, that sort of thing. Not too much that you'll notice in everyday driving beyond the feel of the car in corners. It'll feel flatter and you might perceive that it corners "better" as a result.

Went back and found them, I'm going with the 3/4" rear, this should be good for my application, right? I don't race but yet I will put the car through it's paces from time to time.

Thanks for the prompt response!
