What would it cost to build a ZL1 engine?
The all aluminum ZL1 bare block is still available from GM for around $5,000. What would it cost to build an entire ZL1 engine starting with that block? :) Just wondering...... how much...... to budget..... for the engine!
(OK, that leaves me exactly $352.25 to spend on the rest of the car!!) :) MJ

I'd probably expect at least 7-8k total.
But it's FREE if you steal it! (Maybe they won't notice you walking out with a 90 lb block...)

Mark, planning something extreme? :jester
Block: $5000
Rotating assembly and bearings: $1800 (for GM parts. Scat, Eagle, offshore stuff is cheaper)
Heads: GM heads $2000 ($3000 for the aftermarket heads that it deserves :))
Carb: $400+
Intake: $200
Fuel pump and carb lines: $100
Solid cam, lifters, springs: $500
Pushrods: $100
Valve covers, timing cover, etc.: $200
Distributor: $200
Oil pan and system: $300
Head gaskets: $80
Other gaskets: $100
timing chain: $75
Balancer: $120
Engine bolt kit: $80
Head bolts: $100
Balancing and machine work: $800
Lots and lots of little stuff: Balancer bolts, oil pump studs, oil pump pushrods, fuel pump pushrods, etc., a few hundred easy.
Lots of this stuff is negotiable, but you get the idea. Since I have most of this stuff on the shelf in my garage (except for that little aluminum block), there's no way I'll be totaling it up!

Re: What would it cost to build a ZL1 engine? (Pacin'California)
I saw a 454 made from the new block. It had alum heads, etc. I think it had the same fuel injection set up that's available in the 502. Not a true ZL-1 but about $20,000 from either Scoggin-Dickey, Sallee or perhaps pace or greenwood Chevy. A bit pricy!!!
I agree with other post except if you add about $1800 for the alum GM heads and about $1800 for a forged rotating assembly and a cam, even if just stock solid, rockers, valve train parts, oil pan, flywheel, balancer, intake, carb, engine assembly, etc. I would guess closer to $10,000. Still, not a bad price for what you would have.

An LS-1 uses an aluminum block...
Could that be a cheaper starting point?
