heater fan only works on full
hi,
the heater fan only works on full,
now, looking under the bonnet yesterday i noticed that the owner before me has disconnected the blower motor resistor,
could this have anything to do with it???
also, why would this have been disconnected in the first place????
if this is not a likely cause, what could it be,
what is the relay looking type box just above the resistor???
thanks,
neil

Normally the answer to your question is the relay, however you must have the resistors connected in order to get the lower speeds. I would pull the resistors and inspect them for burnout or shorts. If all is OK then re-connect them. If you still only have high, then replace the relay.

Re: heater fan only works on full (markdtn)
took relay apart, it seems ok,
connected the resistor up and i have all speeds, only i can't switch the fan off, it's on slow all the time,
guess thats why the resistor was disconected,
oh well,
i'm a bit further forward,

I believe the relay has battery power to one side, so if the fan is running all the time(with ignition off), either the relay is bad, or you are supplying power to it all the time to turn it on (Harness, ignition switch). If it is slow all the time only when the ignition is on then it is going through the resistor. Sounds like a wiring issue. I would get a schematic and trace the wires from the switch to the resistor and relay and make sure there are no shorts. Make sure the switch is good. What year is the car? I think some do run all the time on slow, at least my 77 Pontiac did.

hi,
it's a 77, it's only on while the ignition is on,
i've a feeling it could be the dash switch,
you need to slide it all the way to the left for off,
i think that may be the problem,
thanks,

Neil,
I can't speak to your year specifically but on the 82 the fans are powered all the time unless the heater/ac slide switch is off.

Take a look for a heavy guage orange wire along the firewall with an inline fuse. If that fuse blows you will only get high fan speed. Of course, if the resistor is disconnected it's not going to work anyway.
