Exhaust heat shield qustion
Ok, I'm gonna put the car up and look under it to see why my floor boards are burning up. What exactly should I look for?
If you didn't read my last post my carpet melted and almost caught on fire yesterday on a Vette I just picked up.
Thanks,
Bruce

Are you running cats? They could be too close to the floorboard.
Any exhaust pipe touching anything will make it hot, but cats get ridiculously hot.

You do need to clean it. I had some marine fiberglass cleaner for boats and with a brush got the road grime off. Mine had exposed glass fibers/mate and was very flexible as I could have pushed my thumb through it. Kind’ a looked like most of the resin was gone from that area. Now the floor pans are somewhat flexible themselves but I think it should be fairly easy to notice damage if you have any. Not rocket science here. :seeya

It's a 73 so I don't know if it has a cat since I haven't been under it yet.
What I'm really wondering is should there be any heat shielding between the exhaust and floor?

Your 73 was not originally equipped with a cat. There was heat shielding attached to the exhaust pipe in the area of the transmission, and more under the rear end. I have tried to find a source for these shields to no avail, I would be very interested if you find a source for them.
