Transmission question .Lock up or not ??
Hi, I am looking on installing a 200R4 tranny in my 75 vette but can somebody tell me what the big difference would be between a lock up converter or a non lock up one ??
I would use it on a ZZ4 block and buy it with bowtie.
I found a site where they recomend to go with the non lock up for durability and to avoid problems ???
Please advise me on this because I don't know anything about this.
Thanks in advance.

The lock up convertor is the fourth gear. Without it you wouldn't have any benifit and the trans would run hot. Gear ratios:
200-4R: 2.74 first, 1.57 second, 1.00 third, .67 fourth
Turbo 400: 2.48 first, 1.48 second, 1.00 third.

Go with the lockup. I have mine controlled with 2 toggle switches. One switch overides the automatic 4th gear lockup so I can cruise in 4th without lockup if I want. The other will lock the convertor in 2nd and 3rd if I want. Locking in 2nd and 3rd give me a better ET in drag racing. For highway cruising, thats where the lockup really helps. It eliminates convertor slip which helps the trans run cooler, which extends the trans life. It also reduces cruise rpm's and gives you better gas mileage. For an all out race car sometimes non-lockup is the way to go. But for a street drivin car, lockup is the way.

Bowtie will not offer a warranty if you do not use a lockup converter. They feel very strongly that you MUST use one with their transmissions. So follow their advice, not somebody's "smart" idea on some website.
This has actually been the subject of much debate, but for "real-world" driving the lockup converter is a wonderful thing to have -- I know because I have one
