Default Torq Thrust IIs with runout. Beware!!

Just got my tires mounted on my new TT IIs and the guy at Tire Rack commented to me about the amount of runout that 3 out of the 4 had. It was enough that I could easily see it as he spun it on the balancer. I know this has been discussed before (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=527258) . I guess it is still a problem. I got these wheels on Ebay cheap. They're probably the rejects from Chris81's fiasco.

This is just a warning. Better be careful when buying these wheels. And American Racing if you are listening . . . you're loosing your reputation with a lot of Corvette owners. :banghead: :cuss

Had the same problem with a set of NEW Cragar SSTs that I bought years ago for one of my Camaros. The runout was plainly visible on the wheel balancer.

I think they make so many TT2's quality is suffering. I got a set of CL205's. These are TT2's with the center section powder coated to look like the old TTD's. I paid more than for regular TT2's and it was special order. I watched the guy balancng them and all were perfectly true. I figure the special orders get more attention by american racing?

:nonod: They had this probem 3 years ago when I bought mine. Either they are  or just don't care  . Very sad, but Edelbrock & others have some real nice wheels on the market now ;) .

Yep. I'm really pleased with them. Also only weigh 21 lbs each.

They could probably be trued. Any shop with a big lathe can chuck the wheel, indicate it then take a lite cut off the wheel mounting surface. I have done this many times and it is no big deal.
They indicate the bead surface then square where the axle flange mounts the wheels with the 5 studs. Cheap enough once the tires are off,

Make sure the person operating the ballancer has the wheel on straight.
Just a FYI - most ballancing machines center the wheel hub on a cone. That's ok if the wheels are hub-centric (when the hub centers the wheels) which most european cars are.
In the U.S., our wheels are lug-centric (the lug nuts actually center the wheel)
Which means even if the hub hole is not centered, the wheel should be ok if the lug holes are in the right location

The balancer a The Tire Rack is a high tech unit that mounts the wheels using the lug holes. It has a computer moniter that reads out the amount of weight and where to put it. It also actually reads out on the screen the amount of runout on both sides of the wheel; both side to side and up and down. The tech was very patient and explained how they mount the wheel and how they check the runout. The worst wheel had .063" runout side to side on 1 side and .020" on the other. He said the wheels should work OK but I should mount the worst ones on the rear. He also said this amount of runout was unusual for new wheels. It would be interesting if the rest of you guys running TT IIs would slap a dial indicater on and see how much runout you've got.

Zwede ... those wheels look like they were made for our cars. The AR site only lists the 15" & 20" diameter CL205s though. You have 17"s ...how did you order yours...dealer?
