Default How t spot an externally balanced flywheel?

My Dad is swapping in a Tremec 5 speed manual in place of a TH350. He got an 11" flywheel from a junkyard. He's wondering how he can make sure it is not externally balanced. Engine is a 350 (internally balanced, of course). He said it has 19 drilled holes. 2 large, 17 smaller and one hole on the backside. So is this internal or external balance?

There will be an approx 2 - 3 inch long cast-in weight behind the starter ring. Joe

Don't want to steal your thread but I wonder if a 350 flywheel can be converted to an externally balanced 400 flywheel or the other way around ?

MotorHead, you can buy a balance plate that goes between the flywheel and crank to use a standard flywheel or flexplate on a motor that needs an externally balanced one. They cost about $40 thru summit or jegs. For the price of a standard flywheel, I wouldn't butcher an externally balanced one to try to go the other way. Joe

Zwede,

An external balance flywheel will have large rectangular blocks on it, disregard the holes.

Late small blocks " std shift 5 spds" were internal balance front , external rear. If the flywheel came off a 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird with a 5 speed you can be assured it is external.

They can be purchased new for 90 bux,it removes any guess work and or need for resurfacing
