Default Shades of semi gloss black?

I also posted this in the Factory Correct restoration section, but th eC3 guys might be able to shed some light on the subject aswell.

I was at a local car show on Sunday and there was quite an impressive display of vettes.
I have been trying to get my car as "close" as is reasonably possible to factory correct and noticed the different shades of semi gloss black on one particular car that the NCRS judged to be damn near perfect.
How do you get different shades of semi gloss black? I spoke to the owner and he said he used Krylon paint (semi and gloss black)...so whats the trick?
I believe the A-arms are supposed to be a different shade than the chassis rails (as his where)...looked very nice i must admit.
Thanx
Nick

Yes, there were variations in the gloss levels of the frame, engine compartment, and suspension components. Krylon makes a semi-flat, satin, and semi-gloss that are all good for their respective areas. Also, John Deere "Blitz Back" is an excellent paint for many of the semi-flat areas under the hood. A-arms were typically glossier than the frame and other components. Get an NCRS judging guide for a full breakdown on all the different colors and gloss levels.

Hi Shannon,

I have the NRCS manual and also the Vettue Vues 1968 to 72 book and they do state the difference in "finish"
I used te semi flat black on the inner fenders and chasis rails, the gloss was too much in my opinion for the A-arms....so i tried applying the gloss and before drying applied a light coat of semi-flat....seemed to work, issue now is repeating the effect on the lower A arm and on the other side.

What you are looking for can be obtained through using Krylon "satin black". or Plasti-Kote "T-3 hot rod black" and finally a lot of guys are having great sucess with John Deere "semi flat". Your choice, I use the Plasti-Kote available at any Kunkels auto parts store. Check it out, remember my car is and has been judged-----------no problem.

Gregg, I need to paint my steering column (black). Would one of the blacks you mentioned be correct for it?

Krylon "satin black" is closest, however that is just my MO. Let me ask the wizards, and I will reply.

You can use acrylic enamel (black, naturally) and mix flattening agent with it to get the desired shade your intrested in. You can purchase both at your local automotive paint store. :flag

No problem. I have been advised of yet another, and according to the source "nothing finer". I don't know, as I have never used it, but one you may wish to check out. SEM TRIM BLACK.

GREGG, thanks once again. I think I will give that one a try. My car will never be NCRS (at least while I own it) I just want to be sure it looks good.

Anybody have experience with the SEM TRIM BLACK?

BTW, Beautiful car!!
